Companies that provide a quality product/service yet you don't know how - Skype

With family across the country, I tend to use Skype fairly often. I've never paid for anything on Skype, and neither has any of my family, yet their product is used on a weekly basis. Without looking it up, I've got no clue how Skype can afford to stay in business or how they turn any sort of profit, if they even do.
Wikipedia is another company that is ad-free and run off of donations, but I still can't imagine there are enough donations to justify the server space and time/effort it takes. They're a bit of a different animal, but I'm still impressed they can stay in business.
What are some other companies that provide a quality product or service without any obvious cost to the end-user or ad-driven model?

Skype sells a product for businesses to use and is owned by Yahoo I believe.

Skype is now owned by Microsoft and they have unveiled Skype for Business. It is a product that takes on GoToMeeting and Citrix for virtual meetings.
I agree Skype is a very good product.
MalwareBytes is another great freeware that runs off a donation model
Kodi is great
Rufus (creates bootable flash drives for OS installations) is another favorite of mine.

Skype for Business was a huge step forward from the old Microsoft Office Communicator tool

Some very large companies are going to this. You're right.
MS had Lync till MS said "frick this, we want to build on Skype to replace our crappy Lync."
It's saving companies money over Go To Meeting and other conferencing services b/c it incorporates voice and video all in one and uses MS Active Directory seamlessly(very cool to holler at and see someone at another company location 10k miles away with click of a mouse). Companies paying for it means consumers can get it for free. Win-win.

Great one.
I'd imagine Skype is used far more often in the retail world than in a business setting.
I find it interesting that even though Skype provides a great product and it is free for most practical applications, if they decided to charge for retail use, I'd probably be upset.
Funny how we've been conditioned to expect certain services/products for free. Much like internet radio, for example.

I still don't know how Spotify is only $9.99. I've had it for 5 years now and shared across 4 devices(3 have downloaded music). Amazing service and undervalued. I'd pay $20(especially if they improved and got more artists).

As long as you're on wifi, that seems easy to circumvent. You can call app to app on wifi and just turn off the video, no?

Actually, that brings up another good product line - chat apps. WhatsApp and other similar apps are getting huge valuations but I don't see a way to turn a profit in the long-term.

Voice calls as in calling a phone number. Internet calls and video are free but they have to have a skype account too

Yeah, I figured that is what you meant. I was just pointing out that it seems easy to circumvent if you can find Wifi.

I always keep a few dollars on my Skype account so I can call a mobile phone number. It's usually much clearer than using standard Skype for international calls. They also have Skype for Business which is actually a very good product. I use it daily, and I think it replaced Microsoft's communicator tool or maybe Lync, which kind of sucked.
As far as companies that I'm shocked are still in business......Baton Rouge's own Picadilly is one of them. That has to be one of the most mismanaged companies that hasn't been shuttered completely.

Owned by Microsoft now and it's part of the MS Office suite of products (along with PowerPoint, Excel, Word, Visio, Outlook, etc.).
It's a really nice product and fits well.
We use exclusively at my company.

I am a Microsoft guy but I hate Lync and Skype.
I could use a string and 2 tin cans and have a better webex experience than with Lync and Skype has always been a resource hog and drained the life out of any phoen i ever installed it on.
