How disappointed would I be in this? I could definitely get on board with that price.

If it is strictly for commuting I don't see anything wrong with it!

You don't need a manual. It doesn't save you gas. In fact you'll burn more with the new engines.

Well there's a reason I'm driving so far

Golfer, I know that. I just want a manual. Pretty much everything about this is from necessity and having a manual will at least make it a little enjoyable. I love driving manuals.

I guess. Just defeats the purpose of commuting

Stop trying to keep up with everyone else , and get something that is comfortable and fuel efficient . More than likely , that guy driving the king ranch 4x4 is not as well off as you think . I could buy really any vehicle I want , but having a great , dependable commuter car frees up cash for a lot of other things .

If you're putting 40k a year on it, I would buy new. By the time you go through the hassle of repairs and downtime, you'll be better off starting fresh

I'm not. I just want to know what my options are and preferably hear some first hand accounts of what is what.

40k a year? I would think about moving instead of spending my off time in a metal box dealing with LA roads/drivers.

I thought about it. I'd rather stay around where I am and commute. The drive doesn't bother me (yet).

40k miles/yr you really need to look at Jetta TDI (which they make in manual). Were putting about 35k/yr on ours and the fuel expense is about $55/wk

Late models prelude? Pretty sweet little cars. Not sure about the gas mileage, but it's got to be pretty good.

Absofrickinglootly not. Can't go from full redneck to full hippie in one purchase. These things take time.

My problem with the TDI is that it's a diesel. Just the scheduled maintenance and cost of fuel would likely offset the 10mpg improvement over a gasser. A DPF change is upwards of $4k supposedly, and I would need that 3 years in. Not to mention any unscheduled maintenance.

My mom had a volkswagen and I remember my parents spending tons of money to keep that hunk of junk on the road.

It's a shame because I really like the concept and I've heard they're really fun to drive. I haven't completely ruled it out, but I just don't see myself buying a diesel vehicle of any type. I just don't trust them.
