Just because he has welding experience doesn't mean he will do that in the military, they'll put it him where they need him.

Anyway...Navy worked for me

If he's otherwise qualified and wants to weld he can get a guaranteed training slot in the army, assuming slots are open. Don't know about all the branches.

Join the Marines and do something like intel or communications. Employers love Marines.

Underwater NDI/NDT would be a carry on from there. Stupid $$

Air Force NDI would be a great way for him to try. 458x1 was the last AFSC I remember we were using at the time. Clean, cool job with lots of perks and post-military jobs. Hard skill to find, with aerospace background anyhow.

Navy/Marines have it also but you have to have @ 3 yrs in your first job before you can even be considered to go to NDI school

I have been in this career for over 30 yrs now. He could do alot worse IMHO.

UT/PT Level lll. ;)

I always recommend going to cyber. Tons of money for training and scumbag contractors like me will throw money at you when you separate.

You talking about space command satellite jobs or commo? Army has pretty much the same satcom jobs with a guaranteed slot. Just something else to think about.

Army. easier to rank up, pick your own job, barracks are a lil better.

The frick?

Sure it's easier to rank up, no one stays. Barracks are better? In what regard? Stability since you'll be there until you're an E-6 at a lot of bases?

I think he meant compared to the Marines. Only Marine barracks I've ever been in were K Bay so I don't know but those K Bay barracks were fricking shitty.

Army barracks are mostly a lot better than they were 20 years ago.

I missed this one. I had 5 permanent duty stations in 10 years. My sis-in-law made it to E6 in the AF without ever leaving Eglin, though. Never even went TDY.

Just my experience, but I did 6 years in the Army, and everywhere I was stationed the Air Force had better shite than we did. One deployment we were digging bunkers with picks and shovels and less than a mile down the road the Air Force guys were using bobcats. Talk about a morale killer...

AF can guarantee jobs

Is this accurate?

quote:

Because the Air Force has many more applicants than they have slots, it is very common for an applicant to process through MEPS, and return enlisted in the delayed enlistment program without a reserved job-slot or shipping date. Instead, while at MEPS, they provide a list of job and aptitude area preferences to the job counselor, then they are placed on the qualified waiting list, for one of their preferences to become available. This can take several months. It's not uncommon, these days, for an Air Force applicant to remain in the DEP for 8 or more months before finally shipping out to basic training.

In order to join the Air Force, one must be flexible with both job selections and dates of availability.

Honest question is he seriously interested in joining or is he telling you this so you will get off his arse? If I had a dollar for every 20 something I know struggling and telling their parents they want to join ,but have no intention to join I would be rich. Each branch has something to offer ,but all are a little different in their own way. If he is seriously considering the Army or Marines than I would suggest he speak to people who were in and go to recruiters. If he wants a civilian career afterwards I would say for him to look into Intelligence, Aviation, or Medical within the Army or Marine Corp. If he wants to be Infantry or Combat Arms than he is definitely in the right area. I am not saying there are not opportunities for Service Members ,but every 11B I know ended up becoming a Police Officer after they got out. Again if he is serious when recruiters talk jobs with him look them up on the internet and try to find people who have been in that specific job to and just ask questions.

I enlisted in the Army. Helped me a lot in life, but I’d do Air Force if I could do it over again.

If he wants to weld, Air Force or navy. I was in the army and I loved it. If he is looking to do something else in life, intelligence or cyber and I would suggest army for intelligence (by a Mile) and army or air force for cyber.
