coming to OT for Vet Military Advise

My step-son (24) has had a few jobs but not a career.
He is in some stupid debt (Small auto loan) and has always wanted to join military.
Well, now he is unemployed and that path is looking pretty good. He has work experience with aluminium welding so he is not unskilled.
So which Branch of the Service should he Join to better his future? He is leaning towards either Army or Marines.
Any advice would be appreciated OT.

For quality of life: Air Force...
Most AF machinists/welders have a good gig...avoid the 2A7X5
For camaraderie, pride, etc. Marines..
Avoid the army unless O

He wants to join to do something with his life to get him on a path, but I am hoping he joins a service that will have more skilled trades opportunities.
Thus I turn to the OT......

If he's not stupid, then for the future, he should do "NDI" in the Air Force...
Easiest, best maintenance job hands down by far...BUT, they don't let potatoes in that job

Army. easier to rank up, pick your own job, barracks are a lil better.

Lots of jobs in the Air Force that lead to quality civilian jobs. Like someone else said, aircraft maintenance sounds like a good selection for him, in particular either sheet metal, metals tech, or could even go the NDI route. Can’t remember those AFSCs though.
Btw, my grandfather, former marine, also pushed me towards AF when I was deciding.

Tell him to test with any branch then sit with all to see what he is qualified for.

Yep. I visited with every branch before deciding. Ended up going with the army for guaranteed MOS, duty station and an enlistment bonus. All of them have their pros and cons depending on what you're looking for.

I recruited in the Army for 4 years. I would have never given this advice 10 years ago, but I’m retired now lol.

This.
And don’t sign up for more than 4 yrs (can always re-enlist later) and only put the jobs you really want, nothing else.

and a guarantee for that exact job with training, not a field.

Only the Army does that unless things have changed.

It was when I joined. My info is pretty dated though.

Navy does not guarantee specific jobs anymore? Maybe things have changed since I was on Noah's ark.

Join the marines if that’s the only thing he wants to hang his hat on 20 years from now.
Navy and air force both have lots of machinists type jobs given their equipment.
Army also has a shite ton of jobs just because they’re so big.

Marine Corps.
Best decision I made in my life.

Just want to say.. Good for him and wish him the best of luck.

Certain programs do for them. Air Force made you list jobs but gave fields, Marines entertained your choices but Infantry was their priority, they slotted in fields as well.
As a recruiter For the Army I was able to print in my office a reservation for a specific job, bonus if available, airborne slots and also have ship date to basic. All they had to do was be at MEPS within a certain number of days and it was guaranteed. That helped a lot.
OP, Google Future Soldier Remote Reservations System if interested
