This was always one of my favorite hangouts and the owners are some really nice folks. Hopefully the new owners dont change much especially the bar.

The venerable Columns Hotel on St. Charles Avenue, built originally as an Italianate-style mansion for a wealthy tobacco merchant in 1883-84, has been sold by Jacques and Claire Creppel, who had turned it into a New Orleans institution over the last 40 years.

The new owner is Jayson Seidman, a hotelier who has developed about a half-dozen quirky "boutique" hotels around the country, including two in New Orleans: The Drifter on Tulane Avenue, which this year made Architectural Digest magazine's "chic motel" list, and The Frenchmen, on the border of Marigny and the French Quarter.

It has also been the site of many movie shoots, including Louis Malle's controversial "Pretty Baby" in 1978, starring Susan Sarandon and a 13-year-old Brooke Shields. Clint Eastwood filmed scenes from his 1984 crime caper "Tightrope" there, and more recently, director Steve McQueen used it as a location for his Oscar-winning "12 Years a Slave."

Good bar. Place overall needs a little freshening up.

Sounds like it's going to be a hipster haven.

Posted this on the FDB.

The avenue is in need of a drastic revival. Can't wait to see the pool parties from the street car.

The smell of that hotel is iconic.

You know it immediately when it hits the nostrils.

Id agree with that. I stopped by a month ago and notice some things looked worn out.

Sweet Jesus. Who would willingly get into a pool filled with gutterpunks?

I love The Columns!! That old wood smell in the bar creates the ambiance. Hope they don't screw it up.

If George was an old white straight dude, the hipsters will get rid of it

If they import hipsters at that place it will destroy their current clientele

Eh, shes more incessently annoying than creepy.

Always going on and on and ON about "come play, come play!". Always bouncing that ball and crawling up the walls.

I mean im like, "No bitch I got work tomorrow. Are you going meet with the interviewers at 8am after a bender at the bar downstairs? No, I didnt think so"

Then she just mumbles something about "soul" and "7 days" or some bullshite before running back to her room in what I for sure thought was a closet.

Place WAS a freaking skid row motel. I've never been to the hipsterized version (and never the skid row version either), but you can't really argue they "ruined" the place with whatever they did.

Columns needs an update BADLY. I'll be cautiously optimistic with what these folks can do.

There is a lot of pearl clutching in this thread over what may be.

If the dude brings in a couple hipster bartenders that can mix drinks it wouldn't be the worst thing.
