Can the tune be reverted before you sell it or trade it in?
Yes, but most of them have logging where they can see it was re-flashed now. There are sometimes ways to clear that but it depends on the OEM and vintage.

I bet this guy knows how.
The number one manufacturer of delete devices in the world is in Lake Charles. They say the guy who started it is a tuning genius. They got hit with a massive $3.1 million fine
PPEI and President Kory Willis Plead Guilty and Agree to Pay $3.1 Million in Criminal Fines and Civil Penalties for the Manufacture and Sale of Illegal Delete Devices and Tunes for Diesel
He still tunes and sells the devices but no longer does anything afoul of the EPA standards to tune a vehicle including no longer offering deletes.
He is all over social media showing how he designs tunes. Its a language I don't understand but you can tell he knows it inside and out

He was one of the high-profile railroadings when the EPA started getting very serious about it.
Are you willing to risk the wrath of the EPA over something as stupid as the emissions system on a pickup truck? If it concerns you that much, get a gas truck. If you're having aftertreatment issues, it's likely because you're not working the truck hard enough to justify the operating costs of a diesel anyway.
I'm all for sticking it to the man, but getting involved in this stuff is plainly stupid.

Even if you revert it, they'll likely make you sign a disclosure stating you've never altered the engine/engine programming.
These are high-dollar trucks now, and nobody wants a altered truck, or one with paintwork, etc.
Obviously, that's less important on a 200K, 10 year-old truck, but it could still be a factor.

Or it could be Cummins/Freightliner designed (demanded by the EPA) a POS system that is unreliable and unsafe. Bad electronics, bad software & unavailable parts = garbage can for this lovely pile of junk... replaced with a $10 piece of straight pipe. The tune... that was a bit more $$$

The EPA must be the only people in the world who don't know that a lot of people ignore their "check engine" light.
Yeah, but anyone paying for a custom WRX tune is going to want a real, useful CEL that turns on if there's something truly unanticipated going on, like a cylinder miss or a stuck wastegate. Now they can't have that.
The single biggest impact of this EPA action is that you won't be able to tune a WRX to run on E85 anymore- a fuel the Yankee government subsidizes heavily. It's like one KY-encrusted hand of the federal government doesn't know what the other KY-encrusted hand is doing.

All those hoseclamps and welds... was the engineering done by some guy from the Home Depot parking lot? This is the fricking future??

The aftertreatment systems on many mass produced OTR vehicles are provided by the builder and not the engine company.
But regardless, the issues are largely from misapplication or misuse.
I don't like it either, but when you are talking about incurring the wrath of the federal government, replacing a $60 sensor every now and then makes more sense.

That dinky looking can is made from 321 stainless and chock full of precious metals. Its an amazing gizmo, and it's going to be on gasoline engines this decade if nothing changes.
Eta: that's right people. Aftertreatment is coming to gasoline engines. I did not stutter. Prepare your butt's.
