Wasn't there a whole movement by more intelligent people to go the opposite direction?

Um. If you are black and you are "navigating white spaces", then by definition, they aren't "white spaces".
Lets just say I understand. Navigating the St Benard Housing Projects back in the day made me extermely uncomfortable....

I wonder what the college landscape would like if we had blind admissions standards and held applicants of all races to the same, uniform requirements.

Safe space for Black students on campus that are away from the daily stresses of navigating white spaces

Some frat should set some tents up and tape signs to them that read "Safe Space. For people of color only." Make sure to put it far off out of the way, so they could avoid the white spaces. Matter of fact, they should label the white spaces also to make it easier to know which spaces they will want to avoid.

I'm friends with one of the biggest donors to MSU, I'll see if he can come up with something nice for them.

I dunno, maybe they do need their own study space because good lord the list suffers from poor grammar and structure:

quote:

6) Safe space for Black students on campus....

• Other schools provide these spaces for their students:
o E.g.: Malcom X Lounge UT Austin

Funny how they say other schools provide "black safe spaces", but they only listed one school.

quote:

7) Promoting inclusive environments welcoming to all minority students on campus.
• We want more inclusive policies and initiatives
o Transgender bathrooms on campus

Again, so many policies and initiatives wanted, but can only cite one demand.

quote:

ALL demands are to be met by May 1, 2017 with the exception of #1, #3, #4, and #10.
• #1 should be met immediately, no later than May 1, 2016.

"And by immediate we mean the Sunday after next! Or else!"

quote:

5) Diversity and sensitivity training for all faculty and institutionalized diversity and
sensitivity learning for Freshman Students
• Part of the daily struggles of being an African American student on campus is the daily
micro-aggressions and racist experiences that we face on campus from both students and
faculty.

Well good thing they distinguished diversity and institutionalized diversity training. Otherwise folks taking the trainings may get the wrong lesson plan.

In addition, their sources on the last page aren't cited to the information presented above and the title of list of demands is literally "Demands" (and it is not even centered on the page for crying out loud).

Also, I'm no expert at listing demands, but it typically helps to add leverage to your demands to make clear the "consequences" of not meeting the demands. There are none listed, so MSU administration has nothing to worry about because if the demands aren't met nothing will happen.

They are only creating more racism

I feel like society is running in circles.

First, it was we want to be an equal part of society. Now it's we want to be separate again. Are they advocating a return to Jim Crow?

I'm glad they put a deadline. What is their plan at that point?

That's when the hashtags come out. You won't want to see the hashtags, bro. That's when it gets UGLY.

They want their own hang out spot that excludes white people. How cute. Martin Luther King Jr. would be so, so proud.

HCDC office

What is HCDC?

From demand #4:
quote:

meaning more financing to the HCDC office

From #6
quote:

away from the daily stresses of navigating white spaces and the work/responsibilities associated with the HCDC office. This space can either be an expansion of the HCDC office

So, the demands are for more money to an office where people work, I assume. And this office seems to support minority students, which causes stress.

So, there is next a demand for a safe place, possibly in said HCDC building, to escape their jobs(?) and these stressors (in this case minorities that are being helped at said office that already wants more money). But somehow this place will still be safe and stress free by only allowing in the minorities that are stressing them out at this office?

They definitely existed before 1964. Maybe they want to bring them back?
