It’s more of a walk. Least technical and least expensive of the 7 summits

No one here has done that. I can almost guarantee it.

I know that I must do what's right
As sure as Kilimanjaro rises like Olympus above the Serengeti

Is what I've read and heard. Some friends did it and one didn't summit Rainier the first time.
Good luck!

quote:Kilimanjaro is a pretty tricky climb, most of it's up until you reach the very very top, and then it tends to slope away rather sharply
Harder coming down

Two of my acrobats did last year.

Aconcagua is another achievable summit. The traditional route is literally just a strenuous hike if the weather cooperates.

Parents did it in their 50's. About 10 years ago. Thin air and hiking up 20,000 ft isn't easy but very rewarding for them. They are out of the country now so can't get details but they enjoyed it.

it’s a long arse trail. but the advised route gives you plenty of time to acclimatize. and a decent amount of time on the summit, weather permitting

It’s not a tricky climb but is still dangerous. Altitude sickness is real..it’s because of the quickness in which you ascend. Depending on the time of year, it’s absolutely easy and worth it. There are 5 main ways up the mountain and which you choose will depend on how much time you have, how quickly you want to ascend and how difficult you want it to be. It can take between 5 and 9 days to summit. Keep in mind that just over half actually reach the top, despite it being an “easier” one.
I would recommend hitting up a safari or two the days after you finish....way worth that as well. I would budget $5000-$8000 depending on what you want to do outside the climb and which group you go with. There are many variations in cost depending on the route, company and accommodations off the mountain.
Good luck if you go!

I did it about 13 years ago, so I’m not up to date on costs. Whomever said that is is more of a hike is correct. We did the easy route (there’s apparently the easy or “coca cola” route and a harder route) and took a day of acclimatization as well.
I began getting a wet cough (probably mild pulmonary edema) and two Italians in our hiking group would go a lot faster than us each day and got headaches by the last day (possibly cerebral edema). My group were all emergency docs and one of us had brought some decadron (anti inflammatory steroid) and gave it to them and they got better. Everyone will tell you to go slow (polé polé) and that is the real key to the altitude. We all began taking acetazolamide prior to starting the hike, also to help with acclimatization.
We used a company called good earth tours back then. I have fond memories of the trip and don’t recall it being hard, but I remember reading through a journal I kept and many days began with, “This was a hard day”.
The best part, besides summiting pre-dawn and watching the sunrise from the highest point in Africa, comes shortly afterwards when you ski down the scree on your heels.

Absolutely! I so wanted to be at the Paradise Lodge soonest.

I would think Mt Kenya would be equally beautiful, if not as advertised.
