Must be some kind of mechanical failure,
A couple weeks ago it did a similar thing, though not as bad. It stopped about 8" above the fixed surface.
This is the same bridge the cop drove off the end of just after Katrina. The arms didn't come down to block traffic.

The drawbridge didn’t drop, it lifted and the cars that were at that junction dropped 4-5’. The video shows a guy jumping onto the stationary portion.
Whatever. He sat down to hop to the lowest part, which made that hop/drop about 2ft. Two guys rushed over like he was teetering on the edge of a 1,000ft cliff.

What's crazy is as crappy as the Claiborne Bridge is... and it's extremely crappy... it's not the crappiest bridge that crosses the industrial canal. Heck, it might not even be in the top two crappiest bridges that cross the industrial canal.

The entire bridge/lock is supposed to be replaced... but the 20 neighbors that live in the shitty nearby housing that would have to move are throwing a fit.

That bridge has some history. I used to work in DOTD's public affairs department and was in New Orleans for a groundbreaking event the morning after a police officer drove off that thing in the middle of the night while it was raised (bars didn't come down) and drowned. None of the higher ups thought it was fricking important enough to tell us about beforehand and the media was all over our asses. That was a bad few days.

Biden will tweet about this in the morning and connect it to the infrastructure bill.

Probably a Johnson rod failure.

About 30 years ago the bridge collapsed during rush hour right before Memorial Day weekend. There were a bunch of engineers that thought it should be torn down and replaced with something conventional because they said it would happen again.
