In the Civil War, there were six artillery pieces to a battery and often times, especially in defending against grand assaults, you would see multiple batteries grouped together to lay waste to attacking formations.

Imagine 30 or so guns grouped together shooting at you from this perspective. It really makes you think about the Confederate assaults at Malvern Hill and Gettysburg, as well as the Union assault at Fredericksburg.

Lee fricked up at Gettysburg, no two ways about it.

Lee should've moved on once Sam Elliot denied him the high ground.

Gunner’s Quadrants today are nearly identical to their Napoleanic 12-lb’r counterpart. (Manually sets quadrant or the vertical measurement on the cannon tub). Did one of my college history papers on Artillery’s role in the fight at Malvern Hill and spent nearly 20 years in the artillery community.

Very cool video.

By WWI they had advanced to using rolling artillery barrages where the artillery of the attacking side proceeded ahead of the infantry attack. Talk about putting your life in the hand of your comrades.

I went to a civil war battlefield and the guide said a civil war bullet would put a hole the size of a pool ball in a telephone pole.

Those men were incredibly brave on both sides.
