City Lights

As I drive around BR and even, N.O., one common denominator I see (* again, I just said 1, not “THE”) - when it comes to the crime, is lighting!
The streets, roads, and even the interstate, in many areas, either have poor or no lighting at all..
Then I drive through the Juban area, and it is extremely well lit, with bright silver lighting —- not the dim, amber, cheap bulbs that La. Procurement seems to love to purchase.
I believe if the cities, parishes and state would improve their lighting - crime and traffic issues would decline.
Of course, I’ll probably be DV’d with people saying —- no, no fix education 1st, or fix roads / bridges 1st.
Thoughts appreciated

There are cameras everywhere now and those don't seem to deter them. They would probably shoot out lights for sport.

Broken Windows Theory.
Lack of lighting in public spaces and on public roads is a very visible indicator of crime and invites criminal activity.

Dude people literally walk out of WalMArt, Best Buy & Target with TVs and no one stops them. Broad daylight.
Dude stealing TV gets mad because they trying to stop them.
Dudes fired from TJ Maxx & Best Buy
There's a pattern emerging

I agree that crime is related to the dark parts of cities

Drive around LSU’s campus at night…..and tell me honestly you’d feel comfortable with your daughter(s) walking, jogging, riding a bike in that poorly lit area

You're not wrong. LED and solar lighting have improved and should be ubiquitous on the streets.

Blame Entergy and/or your local parish government. Most street lights are paid for by road lighting districts through parish government.
After Hurricane Ida, Entergy replaced thousands of lights and used newer lights some of which are just a bulb at the end of a pipe, no diffuser or plastic to protect it.

DHS spent millions putting cameras along interstates aboot 20 years ago. The areas the shootings in N.O. happen in appear to have been skipped. None have been added since these shootings have started.
Some competent leadership would be helpful.

I would never put the safety of my life or property behind a light bulb. Evil people do evil things in light or darkness. Lighting only enables them to see your belongings and your vulnerability.

Lighting is one of the major reasons I attribute absolutely no crime happening on my block.
Fwiw, I-10 in the east has been without lighting for about 8 years now. Allegedly a contractor is working on the fix at this time.

I mean, I don't think it would hurt. But, there are like no lights on the Northshore and traffic is awful. Crime is lower here because it's known as St. Slammany.

The biggest issue is the criminals do not fear prosecution or jail.
