99.99% of the panhandlers are addicts. I own several sober living houses and we often kick them out for relapsing. Within days I see the same guys on the corner bumming for money. They get just enough to pay for a $45/night hotel room and their drug of choice. That shitty Red Roof Inn at Sherwood and I12 has nothing but addicts living there. Growing up that was a great area now I won’t go thru there at night. BR, my hometown, is embarrassing how bad it’s become.

The bums are problems too but the "just wanted to be helpful" group keeps encouraging their behavior.

Blvd de Province and section 8 ruined that little strip of Sherwood. The ladies at that Walgreens say that Red Roof Inn is popular with hookers too.

Hard to believe how many years that Burger King, McDonald’s, Waffle House and Popeyes have been off that I-12 Sherwood exit.

you are right about that area of Sherwood. I am disgusted every time I pass through. That Exxon station is terrible. I quit going there. It wouldn't hurt my feelings if that Red Roof was demolished.

Now there is a woman who sets up camp in the covered bus stop in front of Raising Canes. Sometimes she is selling cotton candy. Other times she is just panhandling. Worst part is that she typically has one or two kids with her. She has a blonde haired son that looks to be about 6 or 7 with her most of the time. I don't know why the cops don't get involved.

We live in Woodland Ridge. I like our neighborhood but the surrounding area isn't great anymore.

That's one of the worst run McDonald's in the city. There's also homeless people all around that area. They sleep and throw their trash behind it.

Wasn’t that originally a Sports Authority right there in that strip mall? I remember going there in the 80s a lot for sports gear. It was a very nice area of town.

Was thinking about this earlier. Obviously mental illness and drug addiction rates are WAY higher among the homeless. And there are always those homeless guys you can tell are TRULY homeless - e.g. the guy with long hair, a beard, and a shopping cart with a blanket. I do honestly feel bad for those folks because so many are mentally ill with no real path back to a normal, productive life.

The interesting thing is though - those aren’t the guys you typically see panhandling. Most of these panhandlers could certainly pass for addicts, but it’s obvious they don’t live under a bridge when they have brand new shoes and an iPhone.

So here’s my question: when I see stuff like these Circle K shenanigans, the group is clearly organized. They go out there with a game plan. Are these people addicts trying to get to the next fix, or just deadbeats who panhandle as a day job?

I hate to be so harsh about it but it really pisses me off. Actual homelessness among folks with severe mental illness is a legit problem. But I feel like the Frank Gallaghers of the world are just sucking up resources and killing empathy for the people who actually need help.

Airline & Bluebonnet?

No, Siegen & Industriplex. I feel like that stretch of Siegen from I-10 to Airline has got to be one of the worst panhandler zones in the city. I guess the traffic volume and constant shite shows at red lights make for good business.

I used to assume that all of the people in that area came from the tent city over on Rieger. But I don’t know why they would catch a ride in a cab from Rieger to Industriplex.. it’s only about a mile walk if that.

I think that’s it

Today I drove Old Hammond from O’Neal to Jefferson
I was shocked to see how run down it is between Millerville & Sherwood

The flood really didn't help that area. Old Hammond is rough looking from Blvd de Province to Florida near Denham now.

That mcdonald’s At I-12 &Sherwood is where my brother began his first job (1978/1979). My brother and his friends worked there and about 18 years later were big players at the French Market Bistro and Mansurs.

I can’t drive through that Sherwood area any more. Brother graduated Broadmoor HS in 1980. My family lived near twin oaks elementary from 1976-1988.

It would be nice to revisit blvd de providence where my brother had his first apartment in the early 1980’s. . fricking embarrassment how that area went downhill.

Most of y’all won’t have been around long enough to remember this but several years ago there was a well dressed white guy working his way around Baton Rouge with a “my car broke down” scam. He managed to hit up several people on the OT and it became an ongoing thread about this dude. St. Paddy’s day morning we were all down by the overpass at our party spot and sure enough the guy rolls up. Description from the OT matched and his story matched. Half drunk me starts yelling “motherfricker, you are the guy from Tigerdroppings” and he just turns and walks off. Power of the OT all the way.

100% these people are organized. Stop giving them money.

I remember him and that thread. I saw him twice, once at the Circle K at Siegen and Perkins and second time at the College CFA. Same story both times
