I don’t smoke cigars, but my Dad does and I don’t see how you say they smell horrible. They smell wonderful to me . Might be the ones you smell are cheap shite.
To answer your question it’s the taste. Youre not supposed to inhale them but most have at some point.

The fiancé smokes them occasionally. I don’t care for the smell but he either does it out on our sun porch or at his buddy’s so I don’t have to deal with it.
It does give me additional shite to give him at Christmas. I got him a nice humidor last year.

Cigars stink - the smoker's clothes stink, their breath stinks, their house stinks, their vehicles stink.
The only thing that smells worst is 70's skunk weed.
Cigar smokers are not cool, cigar smokers are not hip and cigar smokers are not manly; they stink.
However, we are in America and if you choose to give yourself oral/lung cancer while alienating yourself; enjoy yourself while pissing off everyone around you.
P.S. your family/friends secretly hate you

Truly a damn shame what those dirty Scandinavians did to an American institution.

You light 'em up to punctuate VICTORY!!! Like Red Auerbach or Jerry and Elaine!
Or you smoke a Tijuana Small during poker night to give yourself a eye-squinting psychological edge.

Yeah I started smoking just a little while before that clusterfrick happened. They completely destroyed all but a handful of shitty blends from Sutliff, and the same for Mac baren. And whatever they do continue to put out I have no doubt will change quality wise.
The whole thing has drastically restructured the pipe tobacco world (granted it’s a very small part of an ever shrinking tobacco world). The worst part is STG dismantled and scrapped the unique tobacco presses and other manufacturing equipment at the Sutliff Tobacco factory after acquiring its parent company, Mac Baren. A lot of the smaller blenders relied on Sutliff to actually manufacture their blends, or would purchase their leaf to blend their own.
Before the news dropped I was just slowly sampling stuff figuring out what I liked, but after the news I tried to move quickly and stockpile blends I wanted. It got out of hand quickly lol. I went from having like a pound of different samples to like 40+ lbs of stuff now lol.

Honest answer here.
I’ve never smoked a cigarette, I think they smell awful, and I’ve refused to smoke one after having family members die from the side effects throughout my life.
I have smoked cigars (like one a year). I can confirm they taste different than they smell once lit. I don’t know the science behind it, but I’m sure there’s a reason.
I would recommend smelling one prior to smoking it. I am also not an expert, but I don’t inhale. I taste the smoke flavor and then blow it out.
I also 100% think I look cool when smoking my one cigar a year at the camp on the lake with a glass of bourbon because I’m basic like that, and because it reminds me of my grandfather.
Hope this is a little helpful.

Too bad you’re not in the SeLa area. I could help you smoke some of that. And also drink your whisky.

IDK about men, but I bought your mom a box of Fuente 8-5-8s and I had to drink Gatorade on the way home to rehydrate.

quote:I can't stand the smell of cigarettes but love cigars. I am simplifying it alot but the big difference is cigarettes use chopped up tobacco with a man-made wrapper and in most cases a filter. Hand-rolled cigars are generally made from fermented tobacco leaves that are sorted and then used for the filler, binder, or wrapper. The most pristine of the leaves are used for the wrapper. Blenders put together a mix of leaves in order to get the characteristics they want in the cigar. It is then wrapped with binder leaf. That unwrapped leave is then put in molds before being wrapped. Any excess is cut off and is used to form a "cap". Larger cutoff wrapper leave goes back to be used as filler/binder. Smaller excess leaf is set aside for cigarellos. The reason for the change of smell is the chemical reaction as the smoke is pulled through the various parts of the cigar.
I can confirm they taste different than they smell once lit. I don’t know the science behind it, but I’m sure there’s a reason.
Machined "cigars" are much more similar to cigarettes than hand-rolled cigars. Like cigarettes they are made of machine chopped tobacco (some of which is the floor scraps from hand-rolled) with the same type of artifical wrapper. It's why you'll see a cigarette smoker smoking a Black and Mild long before you'll see a cigar smoker doing it.
Here's a pretty straight forward video about it:
