Cicadas in February are annoying as hell
Posted by Breesus on 2/20/18 at 2:35 am219
Can we just murder all these loud arse annoying bugs. Murder them all to death.
There must be a nest of these things next to my house. Or in my walls. Deafening.

I keep hearing people say they come around every 7 years. But yet every year I hear about them.
They serve no purpose.
They serve no purpose.

this specific species of them comes every 7 years. there are also like 9 year, 6 year, 3 year, and 13+ year variants
they are important in the food chain actually

Cicadas provide a link in the food chain between trees and critters, which I'll define as any animal that will eat a cicada. Critters love cicadas, and a 17 year cicada emergence is the single greatest feast of their lives.Jun 28, 2008

Wonder why the 7 year variety doesn’t have 7 different groups that are staggered a year apart.

apparently the ones that hatch in odd numbered years during the opposite cycles of their main predators have a better chance of survival. i saw an awesome documentary on it but dont remember what it was called
was a david attenborough doc on netflix i think

Man i love sitting outside on a summer evening, sipping on a drink and listening to cicadas. Very calming to me for some reason.

Gather up a bunch of copperhead snakes and turn them loose around your house. Cicadas are a gourmet meal to copperheads.

It kinda is. But I also associate the sound with it being hot as balls outside, so I feel like it gets hotter whenever one of them starts buzzing

2018 is a terrible year for the periodics with only one small brood expected, and it's in the NY area.
No one is seeing cicadas right now. Not even annuals.
