The suspect is from the Columbia area. This has become a statewide thing now.

I suspect the shooter is trying to make a political statement of some sort - probably racial. Maybe abortion is his issue (a la Eric Rudolph) - maybe he is making a statement on race relations, generally. The church is an interesting target though - anti-abortion doesn't seem to target places of worship. The Klan did, but this really doesn't like their handiwork.
I suspect a solo actor - probably mentally disturbed. Maybe he had a beef with this particular church or black people in general. Rudolph and McVeigh espoused white supremacist views, and were generally right-wing or libertarian.
However, it will not surprise me if he has some leftist views and is trying to trigger a race war - like the Manson nonsense.
And - recent mass shooters seem to be apolitical - the Aurora, Tuscon and Newton shooters all seemed more deranged than political, so "just crazy" might be the answer here, as well.
I guess waiting for facts is just off the table in the U.S. today, huh?
