Son to Chuck Yeager on Christmas Eve: This is for you Dad. I had it custom made. It's a photo collage of all your greatest life's achievements and I had all your long time friends and counterparts sign it.

Chuck Yeager: Waste of money.

The F35 maybe, but the F22 is replacing the F15 which is an airframe designed in the 1970's. We needed the F22.

The F-22 is a true air superiority fighter and on a whole other level, not sure you can even think about considering it a waste of money. Now the F-35? yeah I think everyone agrees.

I guess we should just give up the air force if you're going to keep rocking an antiquated fleet.

This. The F22 is fricking legit. The F35 is a flying glitch.

Antiquated by what measure?

The f15 stealth eagle is better than almost everything other countries are fielding right now and combined with the support structure our air force currently enjoys, is more than enough for current engagements.

That said, the 22 is definitely the future and we should have a small reserve of them to deploy if necessary. We just don't currently need an entire air force comprised of the 22.

You're all reading this story the wrong way. The story isn't about the planes and their capabilities, it's about Chuck Yeager possibily slipping into senility and decrying everything as a waste of money. Think of the memes!

the F-22 is NOT a waste of money. It is the most technologically advanced aircraft ever built and will remain that way for decades to come. The government should have sucked it up and built a bunch of F-22's instead of the F-35.

And, in my opinion, I see no reason why the US is flying the F-22 in the middle east while our enemies are learning their flight signature. Save them for a fricking catastrophe when we will need absolute air superiority.

I'm a big fan of Chuck Yeager and have read his biography and other stuff.

He is firmly in "you kids get off my lawn" area. The guy is 93 years old though and deserves to act however he wants to. Keep this in mind, he's a 93 year old guy on Twitter. That says something.

They are both incredible jets and just like the 22 once had to, the 35 will get everything figured out.

And 10 years ago everyone was complaining about what a waste of money the F-22 was. That's why Congress cut production and only limited us to 187 of them. Everyone should calm down about the F-35. 10 years from now everyone will realize what that aircraft is capable of.

And before anyone spouts the BS about the F-16s beating it in a dogfight, please realize that at this stage of the game the F-22 was supposedly getting whipped by the F-15.

The 22 was always clearly superior...even in the hands of green aircrew
It takes 6-8 F-15Cs in the hands of AtA specialists to get a shot on the 22.

The F-35 is not going to be able to fight like that, relying heavily on stealth tech, first strike assault AtA weapons and evasion.

The F-22, while expensive, is a necessity and we need a couple hundred more in the fleet.

The F-35 is a massively expensive project that will end up filling a smaller mission than what was originally intended. Great replacement aircraft for Marine Corp aviation, AF and Navy not so much.

Yeager is the man, and I would take his opinion to the bank on any plane he flew. I'm sure that he has not flown either of these planes however! I have heard that the 22 is the best that has ever flown, and it can kill with almost impunity. Unfortunately the 35 was planed to be the Swiss Army knife for multiple users. It's not uncommon for such a tool to end up 2nd rate in all. Still it could be e worthwhile addition, and may prove to be superior eventually. Remember how maligned the Abrams, Bradley, and Patriot were? Remember that the 15 was to expensive, and that the 16 would be the do all for NATO at a bargain basement price? Only time will tell.

I wonder if he has been briefed on the caps of the 22 and 35.
