Thankfully something like this could never happen in America, a country that has rejected Leftist ideology . I think it's cool that we are completely insulated from Group Think, Collective Punishment, Correct Sloganeering, Public chants led by Correct Leaders, Public Humiliations, Mob violence, Forced public apologies, Demands that you kneel before your new boss, demands of ideological reeducation, etc.

The Great Leap Forward (FORWARD !!!) started in 1958 and resulted in approximately 40 million deaths from State-violence and the subsequent starvation and chaos.

quote:

At this time children were taught a highly politicized curriculum with the objective of ensuring that the younger generation would continue the revolutionary zeal that Mao considered necessary to stop the country returning to capitalism. Children were encouraged to report to the authorities anything said by their teachers, parents or contemporaries that was considered in any way critical of Mao or government policy. n 1966 Mao brought the indoctrinated youth of the educational system in to play with the creation of a new National Youth Organization, composed mainly of militant teen-age college and high school students.

quote:

The Red Guards exploded on the national scene at a mammoth Peking rally and thereafter for several weeks conducted a rampage, sanctioned from above, which captured world headlines. In their fanatical and infantile zeal to erase all traces of things Western or traditional, they struck terror in the hearts of China's urban population. They desecrated Christian churches changed street names and shop signs (for example, the street leading to the Soviet embassy in Peking was renamed Street of the Struggle Against Revisionism); shut down stores selling items considered luxurious (cosmetics, flowers, and the like); raided private homes and destroyed their possessions; ruined art objects and burned books deemed heretical to Maoist doctrine; humiliated and beat people; and so on.

What we are seeing today with the riots is the opening salvo of the modern day American red guard. The cultural revolution is upon us.

I was thinking last night that what happened in China is exactly what is going on here. Except now it is worse because online media allows the public shaming to occur instantaneously and country-wide. I don’t understand the mindset of people so passionately and voluntarily giving up their rights.

In the tidal destruction the moral melee
The elastic retreat rings the close of play

Culture Revolution is the more appropriate comparison.

The Great Leap Forward was unmitigated economic disaster that resulted from central planning and marginalizing the advice of experts in favor of general “common sense.”

We have our own version and it’s called the “green new deal” and there are quite a few people who want to implement it.
