China takes commanding lead in super computing speed.

I'm not a computer expert by any means (maybe some OT resident experts can give their opinion), but China appears to have achieved massive advances according to this metric, in just the last year. At this rate, the rest of the world may soon struggle to match their advances in just about every field where high speed computers are used. But, on the bright side, US universities are building a huge lead in safe spaces and non-binary restrooms.

A Chinese supercomputer has topped a list of the world's fastest computers for the seventh straight year — and for the first time the winner uses only Chinese-designed processors instead of U.S. technology.

Monday's announcement marks a new milestone for Chinese supercomputer development and a further erosion of past U.S. dominance of the field.

Last year's Chinese winner in the TOP500 ranking maintained by researchers in the United States and Germany slipped to No. 2, followed by a computer at the U.S. government's Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

'Considering that just 10 years ago, China claimed a mere 28 systems on the list, with none ranked in the top 30, the nation has come further and faster than any other country in the history of supercomputing,' the TOP500 organizers said in a statement.

Its top speed is about five times that of Oak Ridge's Titan, which uses Cray, NVIDIA and Opteron technology.

Meh, we've got Pied Piper

Good news. I think China will be more responsible with it.

In other words they finally perfected the technology they've been stealing from us for years.

China has basically zero innovation, they are a country of copiers.

Like I said, I'm not an expert here, but this US/German group that maintains the ranking says China went from one that was about 25% faster than our best last year, to one that is 5 times faster than our best this year. They've been in the lead for 7 years straight. I could be mistaken, but that sounds like it takes more than just copying what we've done.

Even assuming this were true for the vast majority of Chinese (I'm not saying it is, just assuming for the argument) China is a big place with a lot of people, and therefore a lot of outliers.
Don't kid yourself; China has a very large number of people perfectly capable of any innovation that can be dreamed of, just because they have a very very large number of people to draw from.

To a large extent, ranking on the top500 list depends only on how much money someone is willing to sink into a single system to run the benchmark on.
Processors themselves don't get massively faster anymore; 'speed' of these systems depends on how many processors you can string together (and keep running long enough to finish the benchmark), and that depends on how many more or less identical units you're willing to pay for.
It's interesting that they have their own processor instead of using x86 (either Intel or AMD), but even if it is an individual technical advance, they won because they put the most of them together.
I'm not knocking the Chinese here, by the way; what I said is true for EVERYBODY who submits results to the list. I guess it's interesting for different reasons that China is devoting the resources to this endeavor.

That's where my lack of knowledge comes in. I'm not sure how this speed advance extrapolates to more effective performance in real life applications. And I imagine that's pretty hard to know without actually running the machine through a variety of tests beyond what the TOP500 group were permitted to observe. Nevertheless, the speed of China's progress is impressive, maybe worrisome.

I'd be willing to bet that these countries did not release the design and specs of their very best computers.

Japan wants this processing speed for their sex bots.

China hacks computers and steals a companies' files.
They are not good at inventing. They are good at stealing....
