I haven't played for decades.

Dad learned pre WWII in the Navy from a Chess Master who was a shipmate by announcing moves and why. This went on until dad could beat him. This is how dad taught me.

Have him watch some chess YouTubers first to see if he catches on. Eric Rosen, Chessbrah, Alex Banzea, Hikaru Nakamura (might be a little fast for him). Especially Aman Hambleton of Chessbrah, he's currently doing a series where he climbs from total beginner to advanced by following strict fundamentals, win or lose, to teach good habits.

I agree with this, Aman is fantastic. The others are a bit higher level in the content they present. Your son should be learning chess fundamentals and not worrying about memorizing openings.

I also really like Chess Vibes. I find him to be the most digestible in terms of basic concepts.

I’m hooked on those “2-moves to mate” chess puzzles and apps.

Worth checking out all of the satisfaction of a full match in much less time.

Ever play against a top tier checker player? It’s pretty impressive.

I didn't even know this was a thing...or possible.

There has to be limited separation between top tier and average. There just aren't nearly as many options on the board.

it's a great game he can play for the rest of his life. there should be a local chess club in your area if you live in a big enough town and they always have youngsters, but I would go hang out with them and you know watching him because he's still young and you don't wanna turn him loose with a bunch of strangers

FIDE is the chess federation. Idk if the us chess federation has a website for local tournaments or something but I would look there. Have your son do puzzles on chess.com. It’s a great way to rapidly improve on basic tactics.

I haven't played chess in years, but I used to really enjoy it.

I'd venture to guess what delineates greatness is how many moves/combos in advance a player can simulate before making a single move.

I'm not about to win a nationwide competition or anything but I can play chess. Learned at a young age, probably about 9 or 10 if memory serves.

How do you get started in kids tournaments.

I’m sure there’s some travel leagues out there. But at the same time, slow down.

I run the chess club at my school. District champs! Sometime we have 30-40 students when we meet after school, about 15 regulars. I’m an average player at best, though.
