Check out this map (should have known a large chunk of Texas was classified as Appalachia)

I have a hard time lumping Kansas with anything Appalachian.

Well I wouldn't use the designations in the map in the OP for starters.

Texas is kind of its own separete entity, but if forced to classify it as something I'd call it "midwest", in the same vain as new mexico.

To me "The south" (not really sure we need a south and a deep south) is GA/AL/MS/LA/AR/TN/SC/NC. I want to say KY because of their lifestyle and culture but they're pretty high up there. VA is in the same boat..they obviously have massive "southern" roots of course but they're pretty up there as well.
