I was out of class that day. I recorded it off cbs.
Can't imagine the horror the families felt when they realized what had happened.
There are several amature videos on youtube taken from different vantage points. One was taken by a dentist that had just bought himself a Betamovie. The commentary is interesting.

Crazy that it was that long ago.

watching the launch from Michoud, we all knew it was bad but, we had no idea how bad.

In Reagan's speech, he reminded me that Apollo 1 was 19 years before that - almost to the day, so would have been yesterday.

So Apollo 1 was 54 years ago yesterday, 1/27.

And Columbia was February 1st - so this is a bad, bad time of year for NASA - all fatal manned spacecraft disasters of the United States have been between January 27 and February 1st - all 17 fatalities.

Very sad day.

Ironically, I'd just moved back to Louisiana after being discharged from the Air Force. My first duty station was (now defunct) Sunnyvale Air Force Station, later renamed for Ellison Onizuka. (Top left in OP's picture.) My last station was Edwards Air Force Base, where we got to watch Challenger land on one of its previous missions.

I watched it live from the east side of the VAB listening to the NASA audio feed. Two comments have stuck w/me..."obviously a major malfunction" & "the vehicle has exploded".

RIP

How NASA and Morton Thiokol management weren't thrown in jail still astounds me to this day.

I was 2 so I don’t remember it but I’ve seen videos and the punky Brewster episode about it. I learned what death was because of it

Loved that they included an apple for Mcauliffe on the mission patch.

I do too, I was at home sick from school. The one day I missed in a 9 year span of school. I was watching The Price is Right, got up to use the bathroom and came back for the showcase showdown and they had broken into coverage. There was a lot of confusion post explosion and it took a minute for some smoke to clear so to say but yes that was a sad day.

I was working on school work and my roommate came in and told me to turn on the television, something horrible had just happened. Just shocking to watch the coverage unfold.

The only thing I remember more vividly is 9-11 (I was deployed to Bosnia at the time).
