Would you ever install a ceiling fan without the metal saddle bracket? We are doing a mild renovation on a house we just bought including replacing 5+ ceiling fans. I have yet to find one that was installed properly, where the metal bracket is screwed into the junction box in the ceiling and the fan hangs from a ball that seats in the saddle.

So far all of them have had the ball hanging from the stamped sheet steel cosmetic cover (top left in pic) that is then held to the bracket by three small sheetmetal screws. There is no bracket at all. You unscrew two and hear this loud CLUNK and it starts to sag and be supported by the wire nuts.

It is appalling how poor some peoples work is. I'm not a big fan of government interference, but isn't there a building code against this? The fan could literally fall on someone if the stamped sheet cover rusts the wrong way, like two on the patio were doing.

No way.

How is the cover attached to the ceiling? Doesn’t it screw into the bracket?

I guess they just torqued the sheet metal screws into the ceiling? WTF even is a ceiling? Sheetrock?

I have done it without using the bracket but I went into the attic and secured a 2x4 to the joists above the electrical box and then put screws through the box into the 2x4.

In my experience most contract work is overall mediocre if you're fortunate.

Somebody did that at my house. The fan has a remote and I was replacing the sensor in the fan. Took the cover off and that damn thing came down on my head

He's gonna hang it on the bracket, with wires connected, before he puts the cover on. He's a retired MM2 from the Navy. He knows what's up.

That's not the builder. House probably wasn't built with fans in those rooms.
That seems like it's on the prior owner who installed the first fans with no brackets.

Builders now, even DSLD cookie cutters will put brackets in bedroom light holes even if you choose not to have fans installed when built.

That was nice for us b/c we got some cheap fans to install in kids' rooms after we got settled. We got some for 1/4 price of DSLD's offerings.

Stay in your lane, pizza guy. Nobody is concerned how it was done in your papíer maché home.

Merry Christmas.

This is no bullshite.

There used to be this dude who worked on electric wheelchairs at a place I used to go to if I had a problem. He was from Bunkie, LA. Used to drive from Bunkie to BR every day.

Anyway, this dude told me he invented away to easily change ceiling fans. He showed me the design of this thing and actually had a lawyer who did everything to get it patented and said he had been in contact with GE.

Evidently once you had the "female part" (his words) installed on the ceiling, anytime you wanted to put up a new fan, you just had to slide it in and lock it in place. Everything would match up (wires) and that was it.

He told me GE told him they loved the idea, but he could run into problems because it would have to be universal. Every fan, from every brand, would have to have the "male" part.

This thread reminded me of that.

This part makes me want to feed Rudolph to that Abominable snowman in the awesome Christmas show.

Merry Christmas.
