Yesterday, I decided to enroll in the RCIA class with the intention of learning more and potentially being confirmed into the Catholic Church in April.

Oh my.

There's nothing better that you could do outside of what you are doing right now - reading the Catechism.

My advice is for you to very carefully read the Catechism. Pay careful attention to all of the footnotes. Read the References in the footnotes. Read them carefully.

This careful read of the Catechism is the right path and it should take a long time to complete, but, by next April, I think you can complete the task.

Let us know what you think of your study right here on the OT, not on the Political Talk board. Theological discussions belong here, not on Political Talk.

Good luck and God Bless.

To those of you who have been through this process, what would your advice be?

I'm going to think about this and get back with you again later.

However, if I had to note one thing that was an eye opener during my conversion and confirmation process more than two decades ago, it would be that the Catholic Church has been around since the beginning. They have the records to prove it. They have had extraordinary religious scholars writing about all aspects of the faith for almost two thousand years.

Catholicism includes within its huge tent the actual history of the Bible as a work of literature. Viewing the Bible and its evolution as a historical as well as a religious document does not create any problem within Catholic scholarship. The Church writings set down a record of the evolving issues of faith and ethics spanning more than a thousand years. Be open to going into the scholastic side of the faith, understanding the deep symbolism, and be open to studying the Bible as a historical document.

Go to retreats, especially silent retreats, and travel to the Vatican with a priest who studied there. Will be the best trip you will ever make.

95% of the confirmed people in the church probably haven’t read the catechism, the pressure is off.

Everyone who has the mental capability to carefully read the Catechism should do so. It will take months to do so, but, it is important IMHO.

What a lot of people don’t realize is that the baptists are the original Christians.

Every single serious scholar of Christian Theology knows that there is no truth to this statement.

The baptism that John the Baptist offered is not the same Baptism that was offered by the Early Christian Church. It is in the Catechism, and everyone can read the explanation there.

I don't even go this far with the Baptist successionists anymore.

I simply grant that they may indeed trace their founding to John the Baptist, but I don't want to be a member of any alleged church created by John the Baptist. I want to be a member of the infallible and indefectable church created by Jesus.

The Mass is an intricate, organized process. Every prayer has a specific purpose in its specific place and each part leads up to something else.

To the OP, grab this book and read it. It explains the "why" behind everything done in Mass, and shows how the Mass is scripture coming to life.

One thing I like to do is to prepare for Mass by going through the readings, Gospel and prayers prior to each Sunday. The yearly missals are pretty affordable on Amazon

Really? You're going with this stance behind the church that has enabled and protected child rapists?

And they say it's not a cult.

Tell me you don't understand the concept of infallibility in the Catholic Church without telling me you don't understand the concept of infallibility in the Catholic Church.

Has the church ever bound its members to believe that those things are not sinful? No? Then it hasn't formally shown itself to be fallible in that area from a magisterial level.

Didn't Jesus say that the church he founded would be a mixture of wheat and tares in Matthew 13:24-43? Yes? So the rapey priests and their protectors are the tares.

Swing and a miss.
