The famous ship that carried Cook to explorations of Australia and New Zealand was scuttled by the British during the American Revolution:

He was considered a God by the Hawaiian people. He left the island, ran into a storm and returned. They thought a God could divert the weather. So they killed him.

Not entirely true. He was killed because he was attempting to kidnap the Hawaiian king.
