A 64-year-old Canadian man who was left disfigured in a hunting accident seven years ago can now chew, smell, speak and breathe properly after undergoing the country’s first face transplant.
quote:
According to a news release from the University of Montreal, the 30-hour operation took place in May and required the collaboration of over 100 medical personnel, specialists and surgeons.
quote:
“This delicate operation is the result of years of concerted, meticulous work by an incredible team and the incredible bravery and cooperation of the patient and his family,” Dr. Daniel Borsuk, lead surgeon of the Hospital Maisonneuve-Rosemont and University of Montreal
quote:
The man, whose name was not revealed in the press release, had undergone five reconstructive surgeries and was living with a tracheostomy, which caused him to struggle with breathing, sleeping, eating and speaking.

The transplant, coordinated by Transplant Quebec, helped restore his jaws, facial muscles, teeth, lips and nose.

He should have stole John Travolota's face.

Can't imagine the psychological effect of wearing someone else's face permanently.

He lived in constant pain, undergoing five reconstructive surgeries Forced to live with a tracheostomy (an opening in the trachea), the man had great trouble breathing, sleeping, eating and speaking. Moreover, social interactions and public appearances proved to be challenging and resulted in the patient choosing to remain indoors and isolated.
What kind of accident

Much better than the lady who got her face ripped off by the chimp.

Good thing he wasn't in prison for that 1st pic.
I imagine it'd be a rough stint for ol' pussface

It looks like he’s holding his jaw on in the after pic. Does he have to physically make it flap to talk properly?

His mouth looks wide up in that second pic. Maybe can't use the muscles yet, or ever.
