As mentioned, water and sediment can definitely contaminate gas. I make it a point to never use a gas station when I see the fuel tanker filling the station tanks. It stirs up everything at the bottom.

call the gas station you stopped at. may be a worthless call but you can at least ask if he's had anyone else come to them with other similar issues.

I was damn close to empty, definitely not to the point of actually running out of gas, but the empty light was on and wanna say the calc said I probably had 20 miles left

I’m assuming I need to go to a mechanic to drain a tank?

Shell's sulfur issues

quote:

Just before the Memorial Day weekend, Shell Oil Co. stopped the sale of gasoline at more than 500 stations in Florida and Louisiana because of high levels of sulfur that could alter and possibly ruin fuel gauges.

Baw, here’s your problem. I buy new cars every 6 months so I don’t have to change the oil. Never had any maintenance issues in my life.

Old school trick is pouring a bottle of rubbing alcohol into the tank. It will attract any moisture.

The fuel line at the motor on my project car will get hot and kind of vapor lock the fuel line. Sometimes it starts after a couple tries. Sometimes it's 20 mins.

This morning I get gas at an admittedly suspect-looking gas station but was on the road and needed what I could get. When I go to start-up, it will barely start, almost like I got a bad starter / spark plug, and then it stutters and sorta dies like the battery is weak. I give it a second, try it again, same thing. After the fourth time it actually starts up, and I can get to my destination without any issue (drove for about 10 minutes)

I’ve started it up since, and it immediately turned over. Is this just shitty gas? Is that such a thing? Is there anything to do at this point?

Issues with your EVAP system can cause a car to run rough on a full tank but run normal once you burn some of the gas off.

If it idles rough or won’t turn over next time you fill up, this is what I would look into.

Sounds like bad gas. Dump a couple of bottles of seafoam in the tank when you get to half a tank fill it up with no ethanol gas add more seafoam. Do this a few times and it should be fine

Water in gas can happen, but is probably much more rare than most people think or claim. Water settles to the bottom, plus there's sumps and filters in the way. Also tanks are checked regularly for water.

Water is rarely "mixed" in with gas (although it's possible in cold temps), there is a clear dividing line between fuel and water.

My daughter got gas at a Murphy a couple of years ago and drove the short distance home. She told her dad that the car started acting weird when she was pulling into the driveway. I had just gotten a warning on the Nextdoor app that others were having car trouble from the same Murphy, thankfully. My husband called Murphy, and sure enough, there was water in the gas. Murphy had had enough calls that they were already set up to handle the situation; they paid to have my daughter’s car towed to the mechanic who told us that the gas in her car was over half water, and they had already had a customer with the same problem. Murphy paid $800 to drain the gas and make repairs. Another good reason to save your receipts when you get gas.
