Say you raise a cow from when its a calf. And you become attached so that its more like a pet. When that cow dies of old age could you still eat it? Assume it only recently died (less than 24 hrs). Is there anything dangerous to do this?

I don’t see how there would be a difference between dying of natural causes versus having a bullet put in its head.

You can eat anything you want to eat.

Now who knows what happens next.

But to answer your question. Yes you can eat it.

are cows similar to horses in longevity?

I imagine a 30 year old scrawny horse wouldnt taste great.

Tough question. People can get attached to animals. I think it all depends on how much happiness she brangus.

It is best not to.

I think it is illegal to sell beef from a cow that dies of natural causes.

Unless you naturally launched a bullet to its brain while it was happily eating some feed, then I wouldn't eat it.

I was cruising down a rural highway near Pecos a while back and there was a dead cow on the side of the road, been hit by a semi or oil field truck.

Two trucks had pulled over and these Mexicans were slicing them off some ribs and roasts, loading up their coolers.

As for OP, I am no rancher, but from what I have picked up I would say you probably do not want to eat it.

The taste depends on the muscle/fat content, what they were fed, etc.

I imagine a cow that dies of old age probably had some sort of illness prior to passing that would have spoiled the meat flavor.

If you were about to die from starvation you could probably eat it and live, but it would not taste good and might make you sick.

I'm not sure where I heard this but supposedly a greenish tinge to the fat means that the cow/whatever was losing weight when it was killed/died and that should raise red flags.

I wouldn't. The assumption is "old age" but there's no way short of an autopsy you could know exactly why.

Age of the cow is one significant difference. Also, 24 hours is a long time for a dead animal in LA that has not been put on ice or cut up and put in a freezer.

Would you like to eat a Wal-Mart greeter (assuming you were a cannibal)?

I doubt it would be veally good.

Sure, you could eat it but the meat quality wouldn’t be like what you are used to.
