are plant operators the only guys that aren't at home at 6pm everyday and make every single holiday?

accountants (especially during tax season), anyone in retail (especially during holidays), HR, etc

The list could go on and on but for some reason only operators get the stigma of having no free time which as I said is BS. I am self-employed, but if I wasn't, I would gladly work 4-10s and some of the other shifts to have 3-5 days off.

I'm an operator and have been for quite some time, and some of you dipshits have no clue of what your talking about, it's really hilarious.

I am an operator with a 2 year old kid, I can tell you honestly at times it sucks because your not there for your kid. But when your making great money and have great benifits for your child everyday is like Christmas for them. But that's just my thinking.

thanks for your honest post. I think your story is the point I'm trying to make. most guys I knew growing up missed tons of time with their dads…never went to games, missed christmases, all kinds of stuff. it was the exception if the dad was there….Everyone has to make a living somehow and I get that, but for me I couldn't trade it for missing that much of my kids and wife's time.

difference for me is I never have to worry about working nights, weekends, holidays, etc.

Every job has its plus and minuses though.

I took off today because I just felt like it.

My dad just retired from being an operator for the last 40 years. He worked shift work and, yes, he was gone a lot. He did miss about half the holidays and worked a lot of weekends doing shift work. Great pay for a high school education.

I work about 40 hours a week at an office job and make about 25k more per year than he did at the end. It's all relative.

out of curiosity, if you got a call at work from the wife saying that T-boy fell out of a tree and broke his arm, could you leave work for a couple of hours to go see about T-boy?

Yes, the amount of dumb speculation on the OT for operators is comical. I've left for one of my kids twice in the past year...

This all stemmed from one thread about 3 years ago. Some dipshit came on, probably just an oilfield worker, went off on a tangent bragging about how much money he made and how many more women he brought home etc. etc.

Ever since then, it's been a running gag on this board.

that's pretty typical of people on the outside looking in, they get a preconceived notion about what they think you do, and that's it, particularly if there might be a little envy involved

You posted this to me so where am I wrong?

Or was that an accident and you meant it for the Ryno?

I'm not envious of anyone who can't spend Christmas or a birthday with their kid.
