Football doesn’t start here until Jr High…when I think kids should play sports all year around in season for each sport. Only some sports work where you can multiple, and football…basketball..track all run back to back. Baseball kids can’t play anything else…can’t do soccer and basketball, can’t do golf and football, it’s tennis or soccer.

I moved from a tiny school to a 5a south LA school.

at the tiny school, a lot of my friends and people i knew were 3 sport athletes (some started in football, basketball, and baseball). at the 5a school, by varsity, there were a couple kids that played basketball and football, but that was about it. baseball players were all baseball only.

unless you're a very good athlete, you almost have to specialize at a bigger school.

Do you also get the feeling that BabyTac is like Chris Farley in Tommy Boy?

Around 2005 it blew up and most of the better players played REC and travel ball. It started at the upper level of youth ages and kept creeping down in age. It has killed the local "rec" ball. It has essentially replaced rec ball in the last 5-10 years with the delusion that you had to play bc it was better competition. Now hardly anyone plays rec after tee-ball and everyone "travels" to the next city and plays the same kids you would in rec ball. IMO, its a huge waste of time (weekends) and money. It isn't better for the kids and it definitely is not better for development. The TJ surgeons are loving it on their yachts.

Add should I allow my kids to play if other players aren't fully vaccinated. Now it's a party.

Don’t these teams have “tryouts?” Or is that just a facade to give the illusion of exclusivity and superior talent?

I see dozens of teams announcing open tryouts on Facebook. I can see how that gives a coach control but not parents.

teams can do what they want.

some may do open tryouts. some may not.

some teams may only do tryouts to replace players lost. some teams may be more cut throat and choose the next best 11 players that show up on tryout day. There's all sorts of varieties out there.

Jaxxyn and Braxxtyn won’t have a shot at the majors if I let the other kids get more innings in than them. What’s the point of getting the wife a 110k SUV if she’s not going to Florida every weekend for the boys to earn a scholarship.

Tell your kid he can't play ball with his friends and tell me how that goes.

Rec ball ball is tough if your kid has any talent. Some cities have elevated REC and Premiere teams but that is a mixed bag of daddy ball and politics. AA team with a good coach is where we landed. As long as my son is having fun and growing as a person through baseball I will enjoy the ride. I love these threads though because they still have a lot of truth to them. Bad coaches and bad parents are everywhere to keep the "Travel ball" stereotype alive and well!

It's not an all or nothing deal with travel ball. My son plays football, 7v7, club wrestling, middle school baseball, hunts, fishes, etc...in addtion to "travel ball". Your son is 9, if you stay in rec you'll find out about the development gulf soon enough.

Travel ball teaches kids they can do no wrong. Boys are treated like princes.

Until a career ending injury.

A cheap team is $1500.

bullshite. Our softball team pays $300 for fall and $300 for spring. This includes 8 tournaments in the fall, 8 in the spring and uniforms.

We are paying $0 of that $600 because my daughter got 2 sponsors.

Our coaches also aren't getting paid. And we have some really solid coaches.
