Like what you smoke and smoke what you like.

Start off with a cheap corncob pipe from Missouri Meerschaum.
As for tobacco, I’m not really a fan of aromatic blends, but two of the best selling blends all time are Lane 1Q & Captain Black Original. Those two blends are probably what you think of when you think of the smell of pipe tobacco. There’s other “codger” blends you could try:
- Sir Walter Raleigh
- Carter Hall
- Granger
- half & half
- Prince Albert
I was like you when I first got into it I loved the smell of aromatic pipe tobacco. However, I never got anything other than hot air from it while smoking. I now basically only smoke non aromatic tobacco.
I’d suggest going to smokingpipes.com, adding a MM corn cob pipe that looks good to you, and then select a few 1oz bulk samples, recs:
- Peter Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake (Virginia & perique aka VaPer blend)
- Cornell & Diehl’s Autumn Evening (an aromatic that still retains some tobacco flavor)
- Lane 1Q (quintessential aromatic)
- Cornell & Diehl’s Haunted Bookshop (Burley forward blend with Virginia and a touch of perique)
- Kramer’s Father Dempsey (English blend)
Those 5 blends & the country gentleman corn cob pipe would cost you just under $40 on smokingpipes.com right now. I think those 5 tobaccos would give you a selection that covers your bases, and can help you figure out what you might like, and where you might like to go moving forward without spending a ton of money.

My personal favorite pipe tobacco is Iwin Rie's three star blue. It is an aromatic but not too much bite.
Of course everyone's taste varies so try a few different blends to decide for yourself.
As far as the pipe I would buy a drug store pipe or even a good cobb to be sure you really want to smoke a pipe before investing in something a little more expensive.
Rie's has been around in Chicago since 1857. Check them out :

I am a former cigarette smoker and frequently smoke a cigar. A friend gave me a pipe a few years ago with some tobacco, I enjoyed smoking it but I can't find a tobacco that I like. I've never tried any that you mentioned. I tend to always gravitate to the more expensive items but I haven't been able to make myself order expensive stuff without trying first. Where could I order samples?

A big part of enjoying a pipe and not singeing your taste buds is packing it correctly and lighting it properly. If it's done correctly then it'll stay lit for five or even ten minutes without requiring you to puff away to keep it going. And - puffing away too much will get the ember too hot and will burn the bowl of the pipe resulting in a terribly harsh taste rather than a pleasantly mild flavor.
Along with a pipe and tobacco, spend another five to ten bucks for a decent tamping and scraping tool. I promise you, it'll make a significant difference.

Also, if it's a good quality pipe tobacco, especially if it's in cake form like Plum Pudding is t crumble it and spread it to dry for a bit before smoking.
The problem with aromatics is that it's black Cavendish with a food grade flavoring and surfactant. It's naturally going to burn hot. Really any type of Virginia is going to burn hotter than à latakia blend, but aromatics are the biggest culprit.

Also, I've noticed a lot of former cigar smokers tend to gravitate more to the Burley blends like Old Dark Fired. A very good, but stronger flavored tobacco. Cornell & Diehl make some good Burley blends like Hainted Bookshop. Another one I like to smoke.
I think i have some of dang near about every pipe tobacco made in the last 75 years.

Smoke an English or Oriental like a real man. Trust me, it's way better anf it's a cooler smoke, so you won't get tongue bite as a new piper.
I for one am a Virginia Flake fan....

I can't remember the blend I used to get at the Lakeside smoke shop that was my favorite.
Same here. I would head to "The Tinder Box" in Lakeside Mall and buy a great tasting and smelling tobacco for my pipes and loved smoking them.
I quit all forms of smoking almost 23 years now and miss my pipe more than cigarettes by a country mile.
For the life of me I can't remember the name of the pipe tobacco blend I used back then.
To the OP, a good burl pipe is a great choice and I still have 2 of them that I kept after giving a few of them away to one of my brother-in-law's who was also a pipe smoker.

I have a bunch of Virginia Flake. I love VaPers. They're actually my go to favorite.
I do think that an English type blend is the easiest for a new pipe smoker because a new smoker can get punished smoking Virginia blends or black cavendish aromatics.aromatic.
The best all around smoke for the money is bulk Stokkebe's Lucury Bullseye Flake. That shite is a great, inexpensive smoke.

Lane 1Q
I buy it in 5 pound bulk packages and for good reason.

This thread has me intrigued. I'd love to give pipe smoking a try in lieu of the occasional cigar I smoke. However, the number of pipe variations is overwhelming. What corn cob pipe is best to start with?

Any cheap cob pipe will do if you just want to give pipe smoking a try. No breaking in is needed.

Yeah like buck said, any of the Missouri Meerschaum cobs will do just fine. More personal preference. The bowl sizes are different, smaller bowl = shorter smoke, but they should all smoke the same more or less.
I’m kind of the opposite of you. I’ve been smoking a pipe for just a couple of years now, and only recently started getting interested in cigars. It’s been fun, but I definitely prefer the pipe & pipe tobacco still. Not to mention it’s a much better bang for your buck. On average a 1.75 - 2.0 oz tin of tobacco costs around $14-15, and you can smoke about 20-25 bowls depending on the size of your pipe, and how much you pack per bowl. For me an average smoke usually lasts somewhere from 45 minutes to an hour + depending on the weather and tobacco I’m smoking.
There’s also pipe tobacco blends out there that use cigar leaf. In fact Cornell & diehl just released The Haunting, in collaboration with Warped Cigars.
Whatever you choose, have fun & enjoy!

Yeah you can “rub it out” or “fold & stuff.” Just do a YouTube search on how to prepare flake pipe tobacco. There’s no shortage of videos explaining the different methods.
