i do not think the UV does much if anything but i am glad i saved the money over the electronic filtration system.
with all my returns up stairs(open air returns) it made the most sense. add in the rainbow in the main area and 3 smaller rainbow filters and my wife and older kids have not had any problems despite pretty bad allergies.
I am going to replace all 3 of my units next year. I haven't even really thought about the filtration but guess I need to start looking at it all.

My allergist and I have discussed this, and she seems to think since it’s just something in my house, I can try to take care of the problem instead of getting the shots
No offense but your allergist sounds like a quack if you’re this miserable at this time of year and she’s recommending you get an air purifier. Are you going to fight this for the rest of your life on and off if it’s being caused by a mild airborne mold? Why not just correct the actual problem and eliminate your immune response to it?

Given how serious this is for you, have you considered having an indoor air quality (IAQ) assessment conducted on your home? You didn’t mention this in your post so I’m assuming you haven’t had this done.
A reputable independent firm/individual that can perform the assessment and interpret the results for you, but at the same time is not trying to sell you a particular equipment product, but might be able recommend equipment/devices based on the results. Easier to address the problem, if you can identify the potential cause(s).
I don’t have anyone I can recommend as I’ve never had to do this but perhaps other posters might.
Maybe some articles like these can assist
