You think the dean's an OT'er? If so, do something about this.

As fate would have it the dean is 'in a business meeting' for the next hour. Receptionist sounded nervous and suggested the Student Advocacy office who in turn said I'd have to talk to the dean of my college, not the dean of students. This thread is gonna suck, Ill update if I find something out from Bill. Then again, do I really wanna call this guy and whine like a lazy arse? I mean he is the dean and all

There's definitely a correct way to word it and come across.

I don't think there's anything wrong with saying in better words, "My teacher is having us come to campus for a mandatory lab during Fall Break, and I was just wondering if this was allowed."

It's not like you're marching in demanding change. You're just asking if they're aware of such a thing and if it's allowed.

That said, is Fall Break tomorrow? You're kinda late on the draw here

When I was in college, I had a teacher give us a project during Spring Break that required several hours in the other library looking at archives. She told us about it like a week before Spring Break, when people already had out of town trips scheduled and stuff.

I had one free day before I left for my trip, so I had to squeeze it in that day, but I remember being bummed.

Never went to anyone about it, though, because they could say the weekends aren't technically Spring Break. But in your case, this is you physically being present on campus during a holiday. That's crap.

Why are you calling KC White...who is the Dean of Students?

You should be calling the Deans office of the college the class resides in, dumbass.

And KC is a cancer survivor, I'm sure she's concerned your view of her appearance.

Screw that nonsense.

Call the department today. Ask for the chair, if he/she is not available ask for the main department assistant.

A professor can not schedule activities when the university is closed. Assignments may be due after holidays, of course. No school attendance may be assigned during holidays.

Asshats like this need to be called out. They look bad for the department. If you don't get a satisfactory answer there, call the college. Slam him on his teacher evals.

Yeah, if you can go ahead and come in for lab during break that would be great.

I would think if you had some work or family related activity then this would be good information to present.

I got nothing. I just don't want to have to go to class while the rest of the university is back home.

Just dont go, tell him its a holiday and you had travel plans and if he penalizes you then go to the dean.

I had a slapdick professor in grad school that was from africa or something that tried to have classes on saturdays during a fall semester, on the syllabus and everything, I think even the other profs and higher ups told him he was crazy, guy had no concept of football or tailgating

Obvious answer would be yes since that is whats happening,

Professors break the rules all the time.

The one loophole where he might frick you is if it was on the syllabus from day one.

If the school is closed there can't be any classes. I feel pretty confident about this. It's like having class during Christmas break. Your professor (like a lot of them) is a total dick/count depending on gender.

Is the professor foreign? I would put money on them being foreign.

Yeah I'd have to be simple to think asking the dean a question about a campus holiday is a good idea. She wouldn't know anything about regulations or rules about said holidays, probably never experienced any kind of a scheduling conflict around holidays either. Thanks for the tip though, I somehow managed to stumble across Dr. Bill's number...blind luck I'd guess

Oh and I don't personally know the dean, but I bet she could take a fricking joke...a-hole
