when I was at LSU my heap let me down so many times, and cost me a piece or two, but one night I was broken down outside a liquor store and this old black dude came out and helped me, I didn't have any cables and he showed me a cool trick, we touched the metal bumpers to each car, took the jack and the lug wrench and put each end on the anode, held them together and cranked it up, used it a few times after

The plates in a battery will undergo small changes in shape over the course of its life due to charge/drain and temp cycles. If the separators between the plates fail, the battery will short internally and no amount of jumping will start it (within reason)

This is a badly warped battery, but is basically your problem.

Yes that is possible, but large diameter cables hooked to the wires will usually do the trick. It's happened to me more than once. The last time it "happened", I put in a new battery, and nothing. It was the damn starter motor. Hope yours is just the battery.

Exactly this. When this happens we call it at as having a "bad cell". At that pont the battery is useless and had to be replaced.

You are buying the wrong batteries. If you buy the right battery, unless you are running a UPS delivery route, six years is well within reason in the Deep South.

(See Lexus original equipment batteries for an example of the right battery. Seven plus years of normal operation.)

Caterpillar... Yes, we make them to fit autos. Expensive as hell but you won't find a better battery on the market.

Makes me wonder. Don't dads teach their kids things like this anymore? Don't people pick up the phone and call their dad when they have a question like this?

yes. But according to Myth busters. You can wake up a dead batter by hitting it the leads of a high amperage DC stick welder.

When they discharge they build up a lot of resistance and need a high amp charge.

Actually had an issue with that last week - wouldn't jump even after trying for 10-15 minutes. But I put the charger on it and left it and it charged up fine and seems good to go since then.
