Big glop of vaseline and a bunch of cottonballs in a ziplock

light weight, waterproof, makes good fire when you pull off a chunk of cotton

The boy scout way back in the day was to cut up paraffin soaked "smokies" of newspaper wrapped in twine, as I recall. Far less messy to buy them pre packaged, but you have to respect the great depression era hustle.

I've used them once, but the tumble weed starter worked better. Don't know if that's the right name but looks like twisted twigs.

no offence, but coming here to tell everyone about camping firestarter is exactly what i'd expect from a subaru owner.

I'm guessing if I searched, I could find the post on reddit you made too.

I know it’s 2026 but twigs still work.

This is the way. Kids are grown now but we did a ton of camping over the years. We also had fun making a challenge out of getting a fire going using nothing but kindling and wood gathered from around the campsite and one match. They would dig me relentlessly whenever I would need to use an additional match. And once they were old enough they would get to try. Could have used fire starters or lighters and lighter fluid. Definitely easier but where’s the fun in that.

Easy fella, you’re the one driving a Subaru.

I’ll give you props for actually posting your picture though (assuming it’s real).

Is that the cargo cover from Vevor? If so, how do you like the setup.

10K mile two and a half month hiking and camping road trip out west

Where did you go? We’re about to go on a 2 week road trip out west… Yellowstone to Bighorn to Badlands, then down through the tallgrass prairie of NE and Flint Hills of KS. Will be a mix of dispersed camping included.

What are those individual grilling grates and what all did you eat? What size are they?

I make them with paraffin wax, dryer lint, and toilet paper tubes. Stuff the tube with lint, fill with wax, then cut to about 1" discs once dry. They'll burn for 5-10 minutes and work great.

I'll probably get called gay for not using twigs or some sh*t like that but frick em. The last thing I want to do when I've been hunting all day is taking more time than needed to start a fire.

If you are close to any pine trees get some pine cones and let them dry out.
