Camp Mystic FIles for Bankruptcy

I’m surprised it took this long. There are a lot of families loyal to that camp but $10 million is a lot to raise from alumni to keep it running. Just a sad deal all around.

You'd be surprised. Not much big acreage available on those rivers. People with money are waiting. Some arent in it for a profit but rather a homestead

Damn - this is a weird time dilation effect.

Normally, something comes around, "Oh, the OKC bombing was 31 years ago," and I say, "No way. Seems like it was just a few - 10 to 12 at most."

This is, "Wasn't Camp Mystic 3 or 4 years ago, after Covid, but not too long after?" Nope. Last year. Not even a year yet - last year in July.

I can't believe they tried to reopen this year. It was crazy how many people were so eager to send their kids back this year.

Mystic is a little bit cultish. It's one way the Houston/Dallas upper middle to upper demographic recognize each other. They make connections there that last throughout their lives. It's not unlike how Uptown New Orleanians categorize themselves by what high school they went to and what carnival organizations they belong to.

I saw one mom interviewed that said her kid wanted to go back, and at least with that mom it seemed more like decision to return was more about their daughter wanting to return and wanting to support her instead of pushing fear on her. They also thought it would help her get some closure on what happened. I would think that the only campus originally having campers this summer being the new area a lot further from the river and back around the bend of the creek played a part as well (before that opening got canceled).

I am not sure anyone along that river was much better prepared than Mystic, so the report piles on some stuff that probably existed at multiple camps and locations with some camps getting lucky due to not having campers that night. The state inspector had a loose interpretation of some requirements, and afterwards the state tried to make some requirements implicitly required versus being explicitly written in requirements in the first place.

But it does show that they could have avoided having anyone die and that they didn’t have a specific plan for evacuations for flooding like that. Years and years of experience watching the river rise and flood got in the way of common sense. After noticing the river got higher than they ever saw they should have changed their expectations of how high and quick the river could rise especially with wide storm still sitting on top of the area. It seemed like they kept thinking that was as high as it would get for too long. It also seems like the dry creek above the campus got so bad that they were limited to one building to take the kids they did evacuate, but I don’t know if that played into holding off evacuation for some of the cabins or not as I don’t know space available there.

I can’t remember if the ceilings were hardwood or how difficult it would have been to punch thru the attic ventilation to get to roof if needed due to water or for rescue, but loading all those kids up in his car did in that entire cabin. The water didn’t seem to get quite as high or to the ceiling in that cabin like it did in the Twins cabins. They didn’t have the extra ceiling space as a cabin behind them that rode it out which may have played a part in his decision, but it seems like some would have survived in cabin if they had stayed even if just by floating out and holding on to trees or other structures like some in the Twins did.

That's sad. I went to Rio Vista and they were our sister camp (before Sierra Vista was founded). I hope someone takes it over.
