Camera Recommendations - Nikon J1 AW1 or Sony A6000

Now that the wife and I are expecting, she wants a camera. She went and bought a cheapo digital that does not produce the photos she wants. Ive been looking into the following cameras:
Nikon J1 AW1
Sony A6000
The Nikon for its durability and the Sony for the preview screen features.
I don't want a DSLR, as it will only make it a problem that Ill have to learn everything about it to teach the wife. These cameras are a little more advanced than the cheapos but not too difficult to learn.
Most reviews are good for both, but I trust the OT more. Any help will be greatly appreciated. TIA.

I'd go with Nikon. I'm just not a fan of Sony for still shot cameras.

For that price you could get an entry level DSLR. Let the wife use it on auto and you can learn how to use it on manual for better control. They become high quality point-and-shoots on auto.

We have the sony and absolutely love it. It takes amazing pictures.
I'm sure people will be in here telling you to go a DSLR, I'd recommend against it.
The portability of the Sony is a huge plus, especially with a young child.
We've had 3 people go and buy the exact camera after playing with ours and seeing the quality of the pictures.

She will have to learn about photography no matter what if she is looking for great photos. Almost all cameras these days have acceptable quality/resolution. You still need to know what settings to manipulate if you are going for a certain look.

get a cannon 5-D. Those are pretty cheap yet they get the job done.

I think this is the route I am going to go, now.
My sister in law runs a photography business and has a Nikon DSLR. Seems like too much of a pain in the arse to lug around.

Can those P&S cameras get good pics of dance recitals without flash yet? Few years since I bought a camera and DSLR was only route to go if you're 100 feet away in a dark auditorium for example.

The A6000 is a fantastic camera (and I've used both the Nikon J2 and V3 and liked them too).
It has a bigger, newer sensor than the AW1 and has the same excellent autofocus (DSLR-type autofocus points built into the sensor itself). Do you realize that the AW1 is a waterproof camera?
DPReview's conclusion of the Sony A6000

Cameras don't take good pictures, photographers do.
These cameras are mirrorless cameras, but work just like a DSLR. They are still manual/automatic cameras.
If you spend this kind of money on these cameras and just use it in automatic, you are wasting your money.

Yes, thought that would be a positive.
Thanks for the link. I like the Nikon D5300 just don't want the size. Seems like the Sony will fit my needs.

Everything I read about the Sony A6000 is good.
Sony is at the forefront of photography now. Nikon and Canon are in the position of trying to catch up.

Go with the Sony. Their mirroless cameras are the best.

Whatever you get, just don't put all your pictures of your kid on facebook

Sorry baw, constant updates on the FB everyday.
Neither my wife nor I are really into updating photos on FB. I do not care for the idea of having so many people having access to your private moments. Kind of weird if you think about it.
