Have a gelding recently diagnosed w Equine Metabolic Syndrome - so he's gotta come off the grass. Vet suggested a grazing muzzle. Anyone have any experience w them? They look positively medieval, except for this one... LINK

Thankfully I haven't had to deal with this. If you don't want to use a muzzle, maybe try to find a dirt paddock to keep him in? You can regulate how much he eats by just feeding hay. Maybe a slow feed hay net or feeder?

That would at least keep him busy

That muzzle looks like something a smart horse could somehow get around or off...

Using an electric fence, I roped off about 2 acres of non grass for him, but he wants to run w his buddies. He's getting cabin fever big-time.

Vet told me to latch it to his halter w zip ties. Ugh. He is miserable. I hate it for him. Been making one other horse each day stay up with him, but he wants out...

While I don't have experience with muzzles, I do recommend asking on the Chronicle of the Horse forums. Unlike some horse pages, the majority of the advice is sound and most are real horse people. Even if you don't start a thread, their search function is good- probably been asked before :)

Sounds like marriage. Why should a horse have it better than me?

Yeah, I'd rotate a buddy so he's not alone. Poor guy.

Mine is on stall rest for a few days and tearing the place apart

Until they start bitching at each other and the one up fest

Though I love a good "houseguest" thread.

so whats the problem? Put the muzzle on and turn him out. They work as advertised if properly fitted. Used them for some easy keepers that tended to get fat on pasture without lots of exercise.
