Being an ER doc is leaps and bounds harder than an IM doc

Forgive my ignorance but I'm not sure what matching means. Does this mean her medical career ends, and the school she has completed was for nothing?
Matching is the process we go through where you select/get selected by a residency. If she were to go unmatched she could apply and possibly do a preliminary year (1 year) in medicine or surgery, after which she could then do urgent care if she passes step 3.

The match is where graduating medical doctors are matched into a residency. It's done by a weird algorithm that no one understands. You rank your choices and programs rank their candidates.
Emergency medicine will be basically impossible since it's gotten so competitive. Radiology is less competitive but given she is an international medical graduate (IMG) and she failed step 1 it's not looking good for her.

Radiology is very competitive.
Might want to rethink specialty.

You can go through all of med school and not match for a residency??? What do you do then???
Med school doesn't really train you to do anything, it just teaches general medical knowledge. Residency is when you actually learn how to be an internist, radiologist, surgeon, etc.
If you don't match, you find something else to do.

What does she have to do to start these rotations she is talking about? Can she do that without passing the first step?
What happens if she fails the step again?

I think you can cut in specimens in a pathology department (not read them out just cut them). I know somebody that did that.

She has been using the term rotations, is this the same thing as residency? Are they used interchangeably?
Rotations are the different services you work on as a Med student. You have a medicine rotations, family medicine rotation, pediatrics, obgyn, surgery, psych, neuro, and some electives.

Fraternity rush, for nerds.

All I know is she is trying to pass this test to start her "rotations" and she said she doesn't even know where that will be but she thought Atlanta before she failed.

It's actually quite simple and works well.

Rotations are just 6-12 week "rotations" in different fields that you do during your 3rd year of medical school. You rotate through surgery, medicine, psych, family medicine, etc. She will most likely have to put those on hold for now to study for and retake step 1.

My school required passing step 1 before starting the rotations but I'm not sure if that varies from school to school.

While Radiology is less competitive among American grads the average Step 1 score still hovers around 240. Programs will take IMG superstars over a dud American grads.

The school will probably kick her out to help them inflate their match rate percentage.

I hope she can make a good sandwich and you have a good job.
She is done. She needs to quit now and stop wasting her $.
Hopefully she is pretty.
Good luck.

Well I wanted to get initial information before I dropped the bombshell that this was actually her second time to fail it. She failed by two points she said. It must be hard because she studied her arse off for weeks.

I'm taking the LA bar starting Monday, so we have both been studying our asses off.
