sure it isn't, does this "friend" have any substantial reason to believe that there are hidden assets, or is she just being a greedy, spiteful bitch that is just trying to run up the tab, because it will more than likely be on the husband's dime?

Don't sign anything until you do the thorough credit check and hidden asset due diligence. I found a hidden bank acct and 401K loan through her employer thankfully. When the ploy was to "I'll just give you half my debt if you push" I offered up a stern "ok!".
You see, unknown debt isn't scary. Divide shite until it hurts HER and at the end calmly say in the end, if it makes sense, you'll just file bankruptcy. Put the house up, keep your Escalade, leave the bed but not the bedroom suit, leave one couch but not the armoire... Take the pots and pans but not the china... Put the photos on the floor and rake half to her, half to you...
Eventually shite hits home. YOUR frickING HOME

several firms have CPA's that specialize in what's known as "forensic accounting"
It's a pretty specialized field that requires extra training beyond the CPA, which is why it is expensive.

im trying to help out a friend who is going through a divorce. they both had assets going into the marriage and built assets during the marriage. He has shuffled somethings around and she just wants to know an accurate account of what they both have, because she believes he is hiding some things.
she isnt out for a handout, but she doesnt want to be penalized for fully disclosing her assets and reward the shady shuffle bc his look to be less than hers on paper.

Sounds like reasonable parties involved.

Is this to get a more fair proportion of expenses?
For example if he makes 50k and she makes 30k , he pays 62.5% of kids' expenses like medical bills(outside of insurance premiums) and tuition and such.
Is she trying to get closer to 50% on her share of expenses, or is she actually trying to get assets of HIS that she feels ENTITLED to? Big difference you motorboatin bitches. I fricking hate family law.

Not necessarily disagreeing but.......The folks I know that do it kind of "backed into" it. I used to do some of that kinda work, just as a regular CPA - this was years ago - but I'm old now. I'm sure there are new techniques/skills that likely do cost a bunch to acquire. That said, I still think the majority of the expense comes from the time it takes more so than any specialized training.
I mean, think of what you've got to do to REALLY know what/where someone's assets are.....
1. Identify every source of spending power they possess.
2. Look at every dollar spent.
3. Identify if that dollar spent gives rise to an asset (as opposed to an expense).
4. Figure out what asset was acquired with that dollar.
5. Value that asset.
Could take a while.
