Getting into the industry is next to impossible at this point if you aren't willing to be gone from home a month at a time.

Not really. Grocery warehouses are basically begging for drivers. In BR.

I don't drive but there is certainly money to be made doing it, you'd just have to be ok with being gone from home for periods of time. Right now our guys that are driver-only, don't own any equipment, just drive, have a take-home pay of around $1100ish a week. Owner operators are around $3000ish per week.

This is oilfield related, mainly servicing Gulf Coast area. Most are home 3-4 nights a week, usually the most one of our guys is on the road for is about 10 days, most times it's only 2-3 day stints.

You won’t be making plant baw money starting out, even though a lot of companies are giving out raises recently. And even then you’d have to get your own truck or get into specialty hauling or ltl linehaul to make over 100k. Throw in the fact that in order to get those jobs you’ll likely need a couple years experience doing otr at likely a mega carrier (there are exceptions ofc) I’d say it’s not worth getting into unless your homelife situation allows for you to be gone for weeks at a time.

The lifestyle/seeing the country gets old pretty fast. The best part of the job to me is being able to take off a week at a time which allows me the freedom to get shite done and still have enough time left to relax.

Grocery warehouses is not OTR. If you really want to go OTR, you're going to have to go to one of these enormous companies once you finish school. They will train to on whatever kind of equipment you will be pulling, then they will make you work and live in a truck with a trainer for probably 2-4 weeks. Then they will put you in your own truck and essentially you have to stay a week on the road to earn a days home time. Just trust me, I know how this works.

Right now might be the exception to that rule. Even the ltl companies are taking guys out of cdl school I’ve heard. Food service would almost certainly take newbies as well as all the other touch-freight jobs.

I agree that with local delivery/tailgate type freight people would absolutely be willing to take on brand new drivers. OTR Companies aren't though. Our hands are tied. The Insurance companies have requirements and because of our piece of human shite governor, those will only get worse out of fear for being sued into oblivion.

I know how it works too. But it all depends on the company. You can still make real good money and be home almost every night.

There are actually stickers you put on your door windows for this.

I have a good friend that is an owner/operator, and he’s making bank. Works out for him as he is single with no kids so he’s free to be out as long as he wants too. Basically his truck is his house.

Mississippi State softball has a similar system, but good luck getting a BJ from one of those chicks.

Unless it's changed, team driving isn't the way to go. You'd think it would be two full incomes combined, but it isn't. My brother looked into bringing his wife with him thinking he'd make $200k a year and never stop the truck running. Trucking companies were only willing to pay his wife half of what he made.
