Tell me about the life of a trucker. Do you like it? Do you make decent money driving for a company? Benefits? Looks like you baw’s are in short supply.

I’ve been a plant baw for the last 24 years and am just tired of it. Tired of coming out here every day and breathing this shite. Trucking seems like a good way to see the country and make a little money.

Thoughts?

Anyone been watching the series on Showtime called 'American Rust'?

If so, is the thing with the different color bandanas a real thing with truckers?

Evidently at truck stops, if a person is just hanging out and they have a certain color bandana, it means they offer something different. Like one color can mean hand jobs, another color blow jobs, another color for both..

Is that really a thing?

The folks I know in that line of work either really love it or really hate it. Those who hated it got out of it quickly.

An old friend of mine loved driving long haul. He liked the schedule and the traveling. He had a wreck that killed a couple people. It wasn't his fault, and was fully on improper loading (litigation proved it was the fault of the company), but it messed with his mind. He drives local, small load stuff now.

If you listen to the songs about trucking, coffee, West Coast turn-arounds, weed, whites, wine, and I'm sure more. lots of amphetamine euphemisms in those songs.
quote:

He got a broomstick on the throttle
To keep his throttle foot a-dancin' 'round
With a cupful of cold black coffee
And a pocketful of West Coast turn-arounds
And they call me Speedball
Speedball Tucker
Terror of the highways
And all them other truckers
Will tell you that the boy is mad
To be drivin' in a rig like that
Speedball Tucker
quote:

And I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari
Tehachapi to Tonopah
Driven every kind of rig that's ever been made
Driven the back roads so I wouldn't get weighed
And if you give me; weed, whites, and wine
And you show me a sign
I'll be willin', to be movin'
Willin'

I work for a large refrigerated carrier based in Tulsa. You can become a lease operator and buy your truck over a period of 3 years or so.

If you’re serious, email me and I’ll have a recruiter get in contact with you.

My brother drives a big rig all over the country. He loves it more than any other job he's had - plant worker, machinist, welder, etc... He does not work well with others, so the solo lifestyle and "being his own boss" fits his personality perfectly. He sends me pictures from all over the country every few days. For him, it's like being on vacation.

Traffic is rarely a problem for him because he's mostly on interstate the whole day. He simply avoids major cities during rush hour.

Cross country with a woman driver is the way to go. They basically have an apartment on wheels. Tandem driving is crucial with this though…. When you are at a truck stop you rest or watch TV and eat real good. Plus you can make a ton of money. The biggest problem is putting up with DOTD rules and regulations…. And if you are smart you don’t have to sit in as much traffic as you think.

Does he take the backroads to avoid getting weighed like the guy says in that song, Willin'?

I know a dude who used to drive for Rooms to Go. Well, he has his own truck. He used to haul cane during cane season then worked for Rooms to Go the rest of the year.

Rooms to go has or had a warehouse in Alabama so 5 days a week he drove to the Alabama warehouse, they loaded him up and he drove it back to BR. I would get through a lot of audiobooks if I did that.
