If this happens, which I'm all for btw, then the rural portions of California away from the major cities should declare their desire to break away from California and request U.S. annexation. The U.S. could then move in troops and form a new Californian state that will consist of the largely conservative areas.

This is like a dream scenario for conservatives. Go ahead California, do you.

Yes, it is hilarious. Losing the state of California would do more damage to the U.S. economy than anything since at least the Great Depression.

Can't wait to see that California army of transgender, gamers, and the collective IQ of about 10 defending their new country. Along with their hugs on their open open border allowing countless South Americans looking for free rides

Whatever short-term economic tumult would be nothing compared to the long term benefits it would afford this country. And I would welcome all leftist dreamers who see it otherwise to feel free to move to the new sovereign state of California. I would even support the U.S. government subsidizing the moving expenses. Surely California wouldn't turn anyone away who wanted to flee to the better life that awaits them in Californialand.

Because the Confederacy lost to the Union, states rights were squashed.

How can weed be legal in the state of California? The Civil war was fought over states rights?

States do not have the right to overrule Federal Law on weed because the Civil War ended states rights.

Southern states take much more from the Federal government than they put into the system.

CA is the opposite.

In a way CA puts us on welfare. You think you want them gone but you'd be biting the hand that feeds you...

You think losing the 6th largest economy in the world would be good for the US? No wonder Trump won.

There is so much California hate on TD. It is surprising to me and I don't understand it.

Well for 1, the electoral impact of California is manifestly apparent. The effect politically on the whole nation is as dramatic as could be. Whether you view that as favorable or not obviously depends on your ideological disposition.

This affects LONG TERM economic policy as well as social and cultural direction. The significance of this is self evident.

Also, having California exist parallel to the United States, it affords potential population swaps for those seeking a life in the country that best matches their values. Theoretically, both states should be in favor of this.

It would also direct mass migrant immigration away from the United States and into California. Again, whether you view that as a positive or negative depends on your political disposition.

The United States and California would obviously trade with one another but they would have tax and business laws unique from one another. I personally believe a more conservative U.S. would provide greater appeal for businesses to set up operations in the United States over a California that in all likelihood adopt high taxes, high regulations, and increased mandatory wage laws.

The market may temporarily be thrown into chaos, but that is a miniscule inconvenience to the potential long-term benefits for the country from a conservative point of view. It also would provide a bloodless and peaceful political revolution, which is obviously preferable to long term social turmoil and political violence, which may stand as the alternative.

And the Democrats will never allow it. They would lose too many House seats and electoral votes.

Ding, ding, ding. They'd never win another presidential election if California left.

Not sure it is as self evident as you might think. I think the negative economic impact for the USA would be short term ( 5 to 7 years...)

There is a good deal of federally funded infrastructure (highways, educational institutions, ect...) that we would want some kind of compensation for as part of the succession. There is just so much other stuff that is not being considered when thinking about the impact on California longterm.

I think you may be misunderstanding my point. I was exactly suggesting that the negative impact to the U.S. economy would be short term. I explicitly said as much. My point was that the favorable economic impact long term would easily outweigh the negative in the short term.
