LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - The confederate monument will remain on the grounds of the Calcasieu courthouse.

The Calcasieu Police Jury voted 10-5 at a special meeting to leave the South’s Defenders Monument where it stands.

A motion was before the police jury to consider moving the monument from the grounds of the courthouse.

A large number of residents spoke prior to the vote.

You like celebrating losers? Or your "heritage" for something that lasted shorter than Nirvana did?

Chris Landry is the only one of the bunch with a spine.

At least there was a legitimate democratic process here. I applaud them for going about this like a democratic republic.

No. I simply don't believe in erasing history like a fascist.

I think the monument should be somewhere besides the courthouse grounds but it should not be completely destroyed.

I really don't get why the majority of the OT blindly support this garbage.

I think most would be fine if the people voted on these issues or city councils had votes with input from the populace. Not just unilateral decisions either by executives or destruction of art via angry mobs

There has been a lot of celebration for losers in the past 90 days

Let's play this game. The majority of statues are courtesy of the Daughters of the Confederacy. A group that supported their loser fathers and grandfathers.

You do realize this statue is on Ryan Street - the back of the family court/clerk's building across the street from the main courthouse, right? They have Courtroom "A" used for ceremonial purposes on the third floor of the building in the background of that picture. it is used twice a year - once for the Fall Court Ceremony and once for "Law Day" the first week of May. Any guesses as to the thoughts of the African-American practitioners that have to walk past it for the luncheons after each event?

Who is blindly supporting it? There was a vote taken and it was voted to stay. That's how it is supposed to be done in this country instead of going along with the mob and allowing them to destroy things they don't agree with or "offends" someone.

Where did I say it should be destroyed? I am lambasting the fact that it remains in its current position. There is a place for everything, even backwards racist symbols in our community.

Can we skip the rhetoric for five minutes and think about what that statue says? Without having the picture in front of me I believe it reads "To the South's Defenders Our Heroes."

What kind of message does that send to our children? I did not call for mob violence or for someone to back a truck up to it to remove it. I do not believe it should remain in its present location.

It doesn’t send one at all. Literally no kid in calcasieu parish has ever thought of that statue.

Oh well. A vote was taken and they voted for it to stay.

Everyone doesn't always get what they want. That's life.
