I'm gonna de-rail from the point I believe you were trying to make, but isn't this how their justice system is set up? I remember hearing something like 21 years is the longest sentence they can give out, but once that 21 years is up, they're just going to renew for another 21 years, then another...basically he's going to spend life in prison.
Everyone in the courtroom shook his hand also, some kind of tradition or something.

How are you gonna rehab someone that crushes their son's skull and breaks their jaw. Something is morally wrong with that guy. That something will never be able to be changed. He didn't do it for drugs or anything like that. He did it because a baby didn't want to eat something.
Now I can see the point of rehabilitation for drug addicts, but not people that abuse children (physically and sexually), rape, and murder innocent people. Those people have something wrong inside them that will never be swayed. There is zero chance for rehabilitation, so why even try?
There should be no second chances. He should serve his entire sentence, and we can deal with an institutionalized criminal when the time comes (because 90% of them frick up again). He's gonna commit more crimes. If you can't see that, you're blind.

serious question... when is the last time you served on a jury? Have you ever gotten out of jury duty?
You realize nearly the only folks that serve on juries now a days are the folks that want the $25... Hard to get a conviction and tough sentence when the jury pool is so polluted.
