The quoted block is 100% true, they will give discounts based on transaction volume, overall spend, etc. If you're a small business, you may find a processor that is financially a bit better, but will get nowhere the discounts Cane's, etc. will get.

Not true. I ran an ISO for 10 years. Interchange is my wholesale (basically) and I can match any rates no matter the size company. Aure, the have "national reps" that go after large chains, etc

But no one is doing it for free. Interchange plus dues and assessments is the wholesale point that ALL in the business pay

I still fail to see why it's so objectionable that customers simply pay the fee a small business gets charged for the customer choosing to use a card for their convenience?

I think they key is "discount for cash or check." Raise your prices without shame. I will 100% pay with cash if it logs fewer expenses for you, how you choose to treat that during tax time is none of my business, but I'm not going to be a witness against you.

Based on the transaction type you've described ($1k+,) I think you can pull that off. An independent gas station offering $3% off a $6.71 transaction would be laughed at. Older folks, and people like me, will gladly drive to an ATM to save $80 or similar. The glass guy I visited in Katy a few months ago was clear, it was $60 in cash, or $70 by card. I doubt almost anyone pays with card. I know it's not the 3% or so per transaction, but he created a very clear incentive to just pay him in cash, and I was down.
