Built in storage and seating should be part of your plan.. As far as the actual construction hit up youtube or the DIY network website..

Actually Lowes has a 6part series that's pretty informative. Not really building exactly like the one they did but got a few good ideas.

I have to admit, I have a hard time picturing a deck on the front of the house.

Check local code about railing. Someone said it might be 30". If it is, could you lower it to meet that? Would save you a ton of effort. Not just in deck material, but if you stain or seal, vertical members like posts and pickets are very laborious to work on.

I prefer 6 x 6 for posts as it gives you more bearing and more of your band to attach...

Just some things to ponder

Yeah their channel is loaded with info and how-to's. When I'm doing a project there are a couple channels that I check for inspiration.

I had only been living here for a few weeks. Had other fish to fry other than checking elevations on the carport floor.

I used to like decks but then I had one. They attract way too many leaves. More trouble than they're worth.

Built a deck with pergola a couple years ago in the back of my house. It was 2-tiered, top deck was 10x20, lower deck was 8x10. Dug holes and set 4x4's in the holes, and filled with concrete. Obviously you need to check to make sure everything is level. In addition, DO NOT leave spaces between deck boards. Snug them up together. They will dry out and separate eventually.

you can, run a winch or ratchet strap or two around the deck boards before you screw them down and tighten it as much as possible, to compress them together... this will help reduce the gap size once they eventually shrink.

Or just by a bowrench.. it was well worth it when i built my deck.. LINK

Also to consider...if you are stepping from your doorway onto the deck make certain the deck is at least 4" from sill/threshold to the deck finished surface.

Does that work if you are putting the decking on at an angle?

Exactly.. I've been using SPAX deck screws for outdoor projects. They're worth every penny.
