Wife just threw me a curve ball and not sure what to do. We already purchased a piece of property that’s paid for, have house pad and put culverts down. Value of about 90k. My FIL offered a piece of property that is down right beautiful, with a pond in back and has live oaks around where our house would be. Pond and oaks would not be on our house property but right in back and on side but would eventually be ours. Previous owner already put house pad but would have to be moved up. Would cost about 45k. Issue I have is it’s in the middle of nowhere. Not much traffic with lots of sugarcane fields. What would the OT do? It would need a little work but would save us about 45k to put towards me house.

Depends on the commute but I’d almost always go for less people to bother with.

Figure out which property you would rather live on and then do that.

Family land if you plan on living there for most of the rest of your life.

You're counting this as a con? This is a triple-pro.

Ask yourself this simple question- At which location would you feel more comfortable getting really stoned and shooting guns buck naked?

Less people and neighbors is always the right answer unless you are into soy.

Is this property on a larger tract FIL owns? Would be my only hesitation in this scenario

Unless the commute is 2 hours each way. About a 1 hour commute for me is the most I can handle.

Is “middle of nowhere” five miles away from the kids school/ballparks/etc or 30 miles? Distance to work? 5-10 miles is fine, but 30 would be a dealbreaker for me. As much as I would want acreage in the country, I like the fact that neighborhood kids will walk over and ask if my kids can play.

Also, I would not want to live next door to my in-laws. Driving distance (as low as 1-2 miles) is fine, but not walking distance. In this situation, he would probably tell you what trees to take down/keep, how/where to build, etc, which would drive me crazy.

Yes, FIL owns all of the land around us. He will sell us a portion of the property at a very cheap price. Just purchased about 200 acres total. Woods you hunt not far as well.

It’s actually closer for me to work as well. Cuts off about 10 minutes.
