I'm planning a 2-3 night canoe trip down the Buffalo River in Arkansas in May. Any pointers/do's/don'ts from anyone that's done this trip before? Specifically i'm looking for some good hikes that can be accessed from the river. I'm planning on floating from Ponca to Pruitt.

How do you get to the put-in location or back to your vehicle if you left it at the put-in?

Pay someone or have a friend drop your car off and the landing site.

Okay, who? Are there transport companies?

Well, Buffalo River is a good 8-10 hours from Baton Rouge...

Well if you go with more than one person, you follow that person to the end location, leave their vehicle their and then you drive together to the starting location.

Sigh. I guess I need to spell everything out on here...

If two people from Baton Rouge decide to make this trip in one vehicle, is there a transport service that will assist you in getting your gear to the put-in location?

I've been interested in doing this trip in the past and haven't found anything offered in my limited searches...figured I'd ask the OP since he appears to have this planned out.

go through a company that you park your car at then they take you up the river and drop you off. when you get back to your car you pull the canoe out.

pretty simple, its how every canoe/rafting outfitter does it.

Check out the link I posted above. They provide all the services and information you need. I've used them before and they are good people.

golfer thare are a ton of outfitter options. We did the buffalo last year. You leave your car at the outfitter and they take you to a put in spot. They pick you up 3 days later at the pickup spot and bring you back to the outfitter.

Just try and make sure you keep at least one cell phone charged so you can call them an hour or two before you get to the pickup spot so you can time it so that they're there when you arrive.

I've backpacked several times out of the Ponca area. Specifically near the Horseshoe and Jim's Bluff. There are some good hikes in that area with good overlooking vistas. A few in particular come to mind. There is a waterfall near the horseshoe that is pretty cool.

Yes. Buffalo River Outfitters will take care of you, even if you bring your own canoe. (My wife and I did this a few years back.)

In my experience, it is better to have a single camp site. !st day, canoe down and they bring you back. Second day they bring you upriver and you canoe back to camp site. It is a ton easier without all of your camping gear (which I promise you will get wet).

I also could not disagree more. Anyone who is properly equipped with dry gear and experience can keep everything dry. I have done month long paddling trips and never had an issue.

Stop at the gas station and ask for the Griner Brothers. They will take $50 to drive your car down there but you may get them down to $40.

High water makes the trip so much nicer...no portages

Don't rush getting down the river. Went with a big group a few years back and they turned it into a race to get down the river. Missed out on a few hiking stops and didn't take the time to appreciate the scenery.

I use Buffalo River Outfitters. I camp at Steele Creek Campground the night I arrive then make arrangements with BRO and they transport you and canoes to launch site. I paddle down to Hemmed In Hollow and make a camp nearby. The hike there is to a very tall waterfall. The next day I usually paddle to a take out at Camp Orr, which is the Boy Scout camp. The outfitter will pick you up there or wherever else you want to be picked up.
You will have fun if you go when the water is at a good level. If you go after the spring high water levels, be prepared for lots of portaging.

Did it back in college with buffalo outfitters. It was March so it got a bit cold one night. Had a great time though.
