why don't the "moderate" muslims just disassociate themselves with Islam altogether? just like with "moderate" Christians, they actively ignore the literal words of their scripture and modernize the values, which is so odd because the more they ignore or disassociate from the scriptures, the more rational or logical they think they become

I suspect this was precipitated by Abdesalam's arrest last week, perhaps in lieu of a more elaborate operation planned for later. With the authorities closing in, it was a use it or lose it situation.
