My guess would be the supervisor could possibly take a very liberal stance with what constitutes being drunk since he picked the spot. He might feel he has to nab a certain number of people to justify putting it in that spot.

either way it shouldn't be that hard to follow the rules. Brpd just ignores the rules for no reason other than acting above the law.

Article states that a previous judge ruled the checkpoints were operated legally. That was the judge in my reference.

Can guarantee they will write DUI's by the letter of the law and not if you are over the limit, but are still not impaired.

The "spirit" of the law is to catch impaired drivers.

FIFY.

If the cops were really worried about stopping drunk driving, the penalties would be jail time. There would be no "pay the court costs and we'll reduce the charge" pleas either.

I would like to challenge other cities across America to see who wins in a checkpoint battle. BR has to be top 10 in the nation.

I thought I heard at one time West Monroe was at the top of DWI/DUI's per capita in the state.

All these assholes are good for is fricking stuff up.

I got a speeding ticket last year from a BRPD officer outside of the city limits and therefore outside of their jurisdiction. I'm taking it to court along with 3 very angry old men who are in the same situation

yep moore incorrectly ruled in favor of brpd. luckily for the good citizens of Baton Rouge the new judge made the correct ruling.

Yup. Officer Ahmed (I hope he's an OT'er) was just pulling at least a few dozen people over on that new stretch of road connecting Jones Creek and O'Neal right where the speed drops from 45 to 35. Talked to city council and they said they had specifically asked BRPD to stop writing tickets there. I know that city council has no direct control over the police department but this one officer is obviously just a douchebag of the highest order. Again, this was outside of BR proper

Im not here to argue about the legality of checkpoints or the competence of BRPD but the above quote is just pure ignorance. So much butt hurt for police that logic is thrown out the window. Do you really think cops control what penalties are set for offenses or plea deals made?

Yes. I do. Law Enforcement has a huge influence in the lobby for penalties, especially in non felony crimes. DWI fines and penalties make a ton of money for the system.

If you don't think the cops bare just as much responsibility for the DWI "collections" as the courts do, it is you sir who are ignorant.

Yeah but they didn't even say if it was pertaining to the same law. They just through that quote in there and didn't even bother expounding on it.

Im in an office full of them currently and none of us ever in 10+ years have been asked our opinions on the penalties for non felon cases.

cops

This term is debatable when talking about the people with "say so". Sheriff Association, Police Chiefs etc arent "cops". They are politicians

I always maintain that they'd catch more drunks by just doing their job and patrolling rather than congregating in one spot where all the drunks know they are anyway.
